Found in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the market town of Leighton Buzzard is very close to the county border betwixt Buckinghamshire and Bedfordshire, on the Grand Union Canal, it has a populace of around thirty seven thousand and a history going back to the era of the Romans, when the ancient Watling Street (now the A-5) passed by the town. Leighton Buzzard History: It is believed that there existed settlements in or around what is now named Leighton Buzzard stretching back to prehistoric times, ancient artifacts and coinage discovered near by show evidence of this. The olden Watling Street (fashioned by the Romans), now named the A5, ran through the close by settlements of Hockliffe and Dunstable around about two thousand in years past, and the Romans will have at the very least been aware of the Leighton Buzzard settlement at that time.

The Romans were later followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who were using the market place during the 10th Century, and antiquities unearthed show that they were inhabiting the region perhaps from the 6th Century. The settlement as it was then is not reported until 906 when the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 outlined Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, in the past, embraced a substantially greater area than simply the town by itself, and included the hamlets of Billington, Stanbridge, Heath & Reach and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the town's name is thought to come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" part wouldn't be added until the 12th Century at which time the Dean of Lincoln wanted to differentiate it from another "Leighton" which he had inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were tenanted to various tenants through the years, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who supported Charles I during the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town grew even bigger throughout the coming generations and the arrival of a railway and a canal in the 19th Century saw it develop and evolve. Modern Leighton Buzzard is a growing market town that's witnessed accelerated development in the last few years.
