Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Facts for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Located in the county of Bedfordshire, the quiet town of Leighton Buzzard sits near the border between Bucks and Beds, beside the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a resident population of around thirty seven thousand and a story harping back to the times of the Romans, at which time the ancient Watling St (now the A-5) passed by the town. These days Leighton Buzzard is more or less connected to the adjacent town of Linslade and is about halfway between Milton Keynes (Bucks) and Luton, it lies near the Chilterns (Chiltern Hills) and boasts a vital sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard History: It's considered that there were settlements in or around what is now named Leighton Buzzard stretching back to unrecorded times, early artifacts and coinage stumbled upon in the area give proof of this fact. The early Watling Street (established by the Romans), now known as the A5, passed through the nearby settlements of Hockliffe and Dunstable around about 2,000 years back, and the Romans would have at least been aware of Leighton Buzzard at that time.

The Anglo-Saxons followed after the Romans, and it was them who were using a market sometime in the 10th Century, and antiquities stumbled on show that they were inhabiting the locale probably since the 6th Century. The village existing at that time is not observed until 906 after the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book reported Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, traditionally, embraced a substantially larger area than only the town itself, and covered the hamlets of Billington, Eggington, Heath & Reach and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the town's name appears to come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" component was not to be included prior to the twelfth century after the Dean of Lincoln had to differentiate it from a second "Leighton" that existed within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were leased to several tenants over the generations, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who helped Charles I through the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard grew even larger over the succeeding decades and the arrival of a railway service and a canal during the 19th Century saw it develop and expand. Contemporary Leighton Buzzard can be referred to as a thriving market town which has seen improved development in modern times.
