Found in the county of Beds in the East of England, the quiet town of Leighton Buzzard lays close to the county boundary betwixt Buckinghamshire and Bedfordshire, on the Grand Union Canal, it has a resident population close to 37,000 and a historic past going back to the Roman period, at which time the historical A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed by the town. Leighton Buzzard Through the Ages: It is believed that there were settlements in or around what is now called Leighton Buzzard harping back to unrecorded times, ancient artifacts and coinage stumbled upon in close proximity show evidence of this. The age old Watling Street (set up by the Romans), now identified as the A5, went through close by Dunstable and Hockliffe around 2,000 yrs ago, and the Romans will have at least known of the village at that time.

The Anglo-Saxons followed the Romans, and it was they who developed the market place sometime in the 10th Century, and artefacts unearthed show that they were residing in the region possibly since the sixth century. The commune existing at this time is not discussed till 906 after the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book documented Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, in times past, embraced a significantly larger area than merely the town by itself, and included the settlements of Stanbridge, Eggington, Heath & Reach and Billington. The "Leighton" in the name is thought to derived from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" portion was not put on up until the 12th Century when the Dean of Lincoln needed to distinguish it from a second "Leighton" that was within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be let to a variety of tenants over the centuries, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who helped Charles I throughout the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement continued to grow throughout the coming years and the construction of a canal and a railway service during the 19th Century saw the town evolve and develop. Modern Leighton Buzzard is a prospering market town which has witnessed greater development in the past few decades.
