Located in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the town of Leighton Buzzard lays near the county boundary between Bucks and Beds, beside the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a resident population of approximately thirty seven thousand and a history extending back to the days of the Romans, when the Roman built A5 (then known as Watling St) passed by the town. Today Leighton Buzzard is attached to the adjacent town of Linslade and is about midway between Milton Keynes (Bucks) and Luton, it is situated close to the Chiltern Hills (Chilterns) and boasts a significant quarrying industry (sand).

Leighton Buzzard History: It is felt that there were settlements in and near to what is now named Leighton Buzzard harping back to prehistoric times, historic relics and coins unearthed in close proximity give evidence of this. The historic Watling Street (constructed by the Romans), now identified as the A5, cut through the nearby areas of Hockliffe and Dunstable about 2,000 years ago, and the Romans would have at least known of the Leighton Buzzard settlement at this time.

The Romans were followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was Saxons who used a market during the 10th Century, and artifacts stumbled upon show that they were staying in the vicinity undoubtedly since the sixth century. The settlement as it was is not described until 906 when the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) identified Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, in the past, embodied a way greater area compared to the town by itself, and integrated the hamlets of Eggington, Billington, Stanbridge and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the name seems to originated from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" section wouldn't be inserted until the twelfth century after the Dean of Lincoln needed to distinguish it from an extra "Leighton" which was within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were leased to several tenants through the ages, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who helped Charles I throughout the Civil War (1642-1645).
