Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Information:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), East of England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Set within the county of Beds, the smallish town of Leighton Buzzard is right on the border between Buckinghamshire and Bedfordshire, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, it has a resident population of around thirty seven thousand and a heritage harping back to Roman days, at which time the early A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed by the town. At present Leighton Buzzard is coupled with the adjoining town of Linslade and it is about mid-way between Luton (Bedfordshire) and Milton Keynes (Bucks), it is situated close to the Chiltern Hills (Chilterns) and boasts an important sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard History: It's felt that there were settlements in or around what's now called Leighton Buzzard way back in prehistoric times, historic artefacts and coins stumbled on in close proximity give proof of this. The historical Watling Street (fashioned by the Romans), now known as the A5, passed through the neighbouring areas of Hockliffe and Dunstable around two thousand years ago, and the Romans will have at the very least known of the Leighton Buzzard settlement as they passed it.

The Romans were in turn followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was Saxons who developed the market place during the tenth century, and antiquities unearthed suggest that they were dwelling in the locale almost certainly since the 6th Century. The settlement as it was then wasn't cited till 906 at which time the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book recognised Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, over time, embodied a way bigger area than only the town itself, and comprised the settlements of Stanbridge, Billington, Eggington and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the name appears to come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" component was not added on up until the twelfth century when the Dean of Lincoln needed to differentiate it from another "Leighton" that was inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be tenanted to several tenants through the generations, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who helped Charles I through the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard continued to grow over the ensuing decades and the arrival of a canal and a railway line during the 19th Century saw the town grow and develop. Present day Leighton Buzzard is a successful market town that's seen increased development in recent times.
