Leighton Buzzard Through the Ages: It's considered that there were settlements in or around what is now named Leighton Buzzard harping back to prehistoric times, early artefacts and coinage picked up in close proximity show proof of this. The age old Watling Street (made by the Romans), now known as the A5, ran through nearby Hockliffe and Dunstable about 2,000 in years past, and the Romans would have at least known of the village at that time.

The Romans were followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was they who used a market in about the 10th Century, and relics uncovered denote that they were inhabiting the area most probably since the sixth century. The settlement as it was then wasn't cited until 906 when the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) recognized Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, historically, embodied a substantially bigger area compared to the town alone, and contained the settlements of Stanbridge, Eggington, Heath & Reach and Billington. The "Leighton" in the name seems to come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" piece wouldn't be added on up until the 12th Century when the Dean of Lincoln wanted to differentiate it from the other "Leighton" which was inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were tenanted to an assortment of tenants through the ages, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who helped Charles I in the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement carried on growing throughout the following years and the coming of a railway and a canal in the Nineteenth Century saw the town develop and evolve. Modern day Leighton Buzzard is a bustling market town that's witnessed accelerated development in the recent past.
