Location: Bedfordshire, East of England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Set within the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the small town of Leighton Buzzard sits very close to the county boundary betwixt Buckinghamshire and Beds, beside the Grand Union Canal, it has a population close to 37,000 and a history going back to the times of the Romans, when the ancient Watling St (now the A-5) passed by the town. Presently Leighton Buzzard is attached to the neighbouring town of Linslade and it is approximately mid-way between Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire) and Luton, it is situated near to the Chiltern Hills (Chilterns) and has a significant quarrying industry (sand).

The Story of Leighton Buzzard: It is considered that there existed settlements in or around what's now named Leighton Buzzard long ago in unrecorded times, old relics and coins stumbled on nearby offer evidence of this fact. The longstanding Watling Street (made by the Romans), now identified as the A5, went through the close by settlements of Hockliffe and Dunstable approximately 2,000 years ago, and the Romans will have at least been aware of the village as they passed it.

The Anglo-Saxons came after the Romans, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who created the market place sometime in the tenth century, and antiquities unearthed show that they were settling the neighbourhood possibly since the 6th Century. The settlement existing then was not reported until 906 at which time the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book described Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, in the past, comprised a considerably larger area than only the town alone, and contained the settlements of Eggington, Standbridge, Billington and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the name will have originated from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" portion was not to be put on up until the twelfth century at which time the Dean of Lincoln wanted to differentiate it from another "Leighton" that existed inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were let to several tenants through the eras, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who endorsed Charles I through the English Civil War (1642-1645).
