Leighton Buzzard Historic Past: It is thought that there were settlements in and near to what is now known as Leighton Buzzard long ago in unrecorded times, age-old artifacts and coinage unearthed near by offer evidence of this. The olden Watling Street (built by the Romans), now referred to as the A5, passed through nearby Hockliffe and Dunstable roughly two thousand years ago, and the Romans should have at the very least been aware of Leighton Buzzard at this time.

The Anglo-Saxons followed after the Romans, and it was they who developed a market sometime in the tenth century, and artefacts stumbled upon denote that they were settling the local area more than likely since the 6th Century. The settlement existing at that time is not documented until 906 when the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 described Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, in the past, incorporated a considerably wider area than merely the town itself, and included the settlements of Billington, Stanbridge, Heath & Reach and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the name of the town appears to come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" piece wasn't appended until the twelfth century when the Dean of Lincoln was required to distinguish it from another "Leighton" which was within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were let to a great many tenants over the eras, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who supported Charles I through the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town grew even bigger over the succeeding decades and the building of a railway service and a canal in the 19th Century saw it develop and expand. Modern day Leighton Buzzard is a growing market town that has seen accelerated development in recent times.
