Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Factfile:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), East of England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Set in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the bustling town of Leighton Buzzard lies near the county boundary between Beds and Buckinghamshire, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, it has a resident population close to 37,000 and a history extending back to the Roman era, when the ancient Watling Street (now the A-5) passed by the town. Today Leighton Buzzard is connected to the nearby town of Linslade and is about halfway between Milton Keynes (Bucks) and Luton (Beds), it lies close to the Chilterns and has a vital sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard Historic Past: It's thought that there existed settlements in or around what is now named Leighton Buzzard harping back to unrecorded times, old artifacts and coinage discovered nearby show proof of this fact. The longstanding Watling Street (constructed by the Romans), now called the A5, went through the close by areas of Hockliffe and Dunstable roughly 2,000 yrs ago, and the Romans should have at the very least been aware of the village as they passed it.

The Anglo-Saxons followed the Romans, and it was they who introduced the market place in around the 10th Century, and relics discovered show that they were dwelling in the area quite likely since the sixth century. The settlement as it was wasn't mentioned till 906 when the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book specified Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, in times past, encompassed a substantially wider area than only the town itself, and consisted of the hamlets of Heath & Reach, Billington, Stanbridge and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the name of the town appears to come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" element wasn't added up until the twelfth century when the Dean of Lincoln had to differentiate it from the other "Leighton" that he had inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be leased to various tenants over the generations, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who backed Charles I through the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard continued to grow during the following decades and the coming of a railway service and a canal during the 19th Century saw it grow and develop. Modern day Leighton Buzzard is a blooming market town which has seen accelerated development in the last few years.
