Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Information:

Location: Bedfordshire, East of England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Positioned within the county of Beds, the small town of Leighton Buzzard stands very near to the border in between Beds and Buckinghamshire, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, the town has a population close to thirty seven thousand and a historic past stretching back to the Roman period, when the historical A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed by the town. These days Leighton Buzzard is connected to the adjacent town of Linslade and it's about midway between Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire) and Luton, it lays near the Chiltern Hills and boasts a significant quarrying industry (sand).

The History of Leighton Buzzard: It's thought that there existed settlements in or around what is now called Leighton Buzzard way back in prehistoric times, age-old relics and coins discovered in close proximity give evidence of this. The olden Watling Street (set up by the Romans), now referred to as the A5, cut through the neighbouring settlements of Hockliffe and Dunstable approximately two thousand years back, and the Romans would have at least known of Leighton Buzzard during those times.

The Romans were thereafter followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was Saxons who were using a market sometime in the tenth century, and relics discovered mean that they were settling the region probably since the sixth century. The village existing at this time was not remarked upon till 906 after the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 mentioned Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, in times past, encompassed a significantly wider area than merely the town itself, and incorporated the settlements of Billington, Heath & Reach, Stanbridge and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the name seems to been taken from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" element did not get applied till the twelfth century when the Dean of Lincoln wanted to distinguish it from the other "Leighton" that existed inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were tenanted to several tenants through the ages, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who endorsed Charles I in the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard grew even larger throughout the ensuing generations and the development of a canal and a railway in the 19th Century saw the town develop and expand. Present day Leighton Buzzard is a flourishing market town that has witnessed increased development in recent years.
