Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Facts:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Found in the county of Beds in the East of England, the quiet town of Leighton Buzzard sits near to the county boundary betwixt Bucks and Bedfordshire, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a populace of approximately thirty seven thousand and a history going back to the days of the Romans, at which time the Roman built Watling Street (now the A-5) passed by the town. Nowadays Leighton Buzzard is pretty much joined to the neighbouring town of Linslade it is approximately mid-way between Milton Keynes and Luton, it is found next to the Chilterns (Chiltern Hills) and has an important sand quarrying industry.

The Story of Leighton Buzzard: It's thought that there existed settlements in and near to what's now named Leighton Buzzard way back in prehistoric times, old artefacts and coins unearthed in the area give evidence of this. The olden Watling Street (crafted by the Romans), now known as the A5, passed through the neighbouring areas of Dunstable and Hockliffe around about 2,000 years back, and the Romans will have at least been aware of the village during those times.

The Anglo-Saxons came after the Romans, and it was they who developed a market during the tenth century, and antiquities discovered suggest that they were residing in the locale quite possibly since the sixth century. The village as it was isn't observed until 906 after the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book documented Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, over the years, comprised a lot larger area than only the town by itself, and covered the hamlets of Stanbridge, Eggington, Heath & Reach and Billington. The "Leighton" in the town's name could quite possibly have originated from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" piece was not put on before the 12th Century when the Dean of Lincoln wanted to differentiate it from a different "Leighton" that he had inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be leased to several tenants over the ages, for example the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who endorsed Charles I through the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard continued to grow over the following decades and the appearance of a railway and a canal in the Nineteenth Century saw it expand and develop. Contemporary Leighton Buzzard can be termed a growing market town that has seen greater development in current times.
