Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Facts:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Based in the county of Beds in the East of England, the market town of Leighton Buzzard stands very close to the county boundary betwixt Buckinghamshire and Beds, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, it has a resident population of around thirty seven thousand and a heritage harping back to Roman days, when the early Watling Street (now the A-5) passed the town. Nowadays Leighton Buzzard is more or less connected to the nearby town of Linslade and is roughly halfway between Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire) and Luton, it stands next to the Chiltern Hills and has an important sand quarrying industry.

The Story of Leighton Buzzard: It is believed that there had been settlements in and near to what's now named Leighton Buzzard stretching back to unrecorded times, age-old artefacts and coins found nearby offer proof of this. The old Watling Street (constructed by the Romans), now termed the A5, cut through the neighbouring areas of Dunstable and Hockliffe approximately two thousand years ago, and the Romans will have at the very least been aware of Leighton Buzzard during those times.

The Anglo-Saxons followed after the Romans, and it was they who set up the market place in around the 10th Century, and antiquities unearthed show that they were inhabiting the region most probably from the 6th Century. The commune as such isn't reported until 906 after the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) outlined Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, traditionally, embraced a far bigger area than just the town by itself, and consisted of the settlements of Billington, Eggington, Heath & Reach and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the name of the town seems to come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" component was not to be put in until the 12th Century at which time the Dean of Lincoln found it beneficial to differentiate it from another "Leighton" that existed within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were leased to various tenants through the years, for example the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who supported Charles I in the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard continued to grow during the succeeding years and the arrival of a railway line and a canal in the Nineteenth Century saw it develop and evolve.
