Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Facts:

Location: Bedfordshire, East of England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Based in the county of Beds, the busy town of Leighton Buzzard lies right on the border betwixt Bucks and Bedfordshire, beside the Grand Union Canal, it has a population of approximately thirty seven thousand and a heritage harping back to the Roman era, when the Roman built Watling St (now the A-5) passed the town. Presently Leighton Buzzard is coupled with the adjacent town of Linslade and is roughly halfway between Luton and Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire), it is placed close to the Chilterns (Chiltern Hills) and boasts a substantial sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard History: It's felt that there had been settlements in and near to what's now named Leighton Buzzard harping back to prehistoric times, age-old artifacts and coinage picked up in the area show evidence of this fact. The longstanding Watling Street (established by the Romans), now referred to as the A5, cut through the neighbouring areas of Dunstable and Hockliffe about two thousand yrs ago, and the Romans should have at least been aware of Leighton Buzzard at this time.

The Romans were eventually followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who developed the market place in about the 10th Century, and antiquities uncovered suggest that they were staying in the vicinity quite possibly from the 6th Century. The commune as such isn't listed until 906 when the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 described Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, in the past, encompassed a much bigger area than simply the town itself, and integrated the hamlets of Stanbridge, Billington, Eggington and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the town's name is thought to come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" component wouldn't be inserted until the 12th Century when the Dean of Lincoln was required to distinguish it from a second "Leighton" that he had within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were let to several tenants over the generations, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who followed Charles I throughout the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town carried on growing through the following years and the coming of a canal and a railway line in the 19th Century saw it grow and develop. Contemporary Leighton Buzzard is a prospering market town which has seen accelerated development in recent years.
