Positioned in the county of Bedfordshire, the market town of Leighton Buzzard lays right on the county boundary between Beds and Bucks, beside the Grand Union Canal, the town has a resident population of about 37,000 and a past extending back to the Roman period, when the Roman built Watling St (now the A-5) passed the town. At present Leighton Buzzard is attached to the neighbouring town of Linslade it is about halfway between Luton and Milton Keynes (Bucks), it lies close to the Chiltern Hills (Chilterns) and boasts a significant quarrying industry (sand).

Leighton Buzzard Through the Ages: It is believed that there had been settlements in and near to what's now known as Leighton Buzzard going back to prehistoric times, early artifacts and coinage found in close proximity offer proof of this. The historic Watling Street (constructed by the Romans), now known as the A5, passed through the neighbouring settlements of Hockliffe and Dunstable some 2,000 in years past, and the Romans will have at least been aware of the Leighton Buzzard settlement as they passed it.

The Anglo-Saxons followed the Romans, and it was they who set up the market place in about the tenth century, and artifacts found suggest that they were staying in the vicinity quite possibly from the sixth century. The village as such is not discussed till 906 after the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book recognized Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, traditionally, comprised a lot wider area than just the town alone, and included the settlements of Eggington, Standbridge, Billington and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the name could have come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" piece did not get included until the 12th Century when the Dean of Lincoln found it crucial to differentiate it from yet another "Leighton" which he had within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be tenanted to an assortment of tenants through the centuries, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who backed Charles I in the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard grew even larger throughout the succeeding generations and the appearance of a railway service and a canal in the Nineteenth Century saw it evolve and develop. Twenty-first century Leighton Buzzard is a busy market town that's witnessed improved development in current times.
