Based in the county of Bedfordshire, the charming town of Leighton Buzzard sits right on the county border between Bucks and Beds, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, the town has a populace close to 37,000 and a history harping back to Roman times, at which time the historic A5 (then known as Watling St) passed the town. Presently Leighton Buzzard is connected to the nearby town of Linslade and it is roughly midway between Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire) and Luton, it is situated near to the Chiltern Hills (Chilterns) and boasts an important quarrying industry (sand).

The History of Leighton Buzzard: It's thought that there had been settlements in or around what is now named Leighton Buzzard way back in prehistoric times, old artifacts and coinage discovered in the area offer evidence of this. The olden Watling Street (crafted by the Romans), now called the A5, cut through the close by areas of Hockliffe and Dunstable over 2,000 years ago, and the Romans would have at least known of Leighton Buzzard during those times.

The Anglo-Saxons followed the Romans, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who set up the market place during the 10th Century, and artifacts stumbled on show that they were settling the vicinity more than likely since the 6th Century. The settlement as it was then is not documented till 906 after the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) listed Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, in times past, embraced a way bigger area than simply the town alone, and contained the settlements of Eggington, Billington, Stanbridge and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the name is thought to derived from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" portion was not included until the 12th Century when the Dean of Lincoln needed to differentiate it from a different "Leighton" which existed within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be let to a number of tenants through the ages, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who helped Charles I during the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town carried on growing through the coming generations and the coming of a railway and a canal in the 19th Century saw it develop and develop. Current day Leighton Buzzard can be referred to as a blooming market town that's witnessed improved development in the recent past.
