Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Information:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Located in the county of Bedfordshire, the market town of Leighton Buzzard stands close to the boundary between Buckinghamshire and Beds, on the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a resident population close to thirty seven thousand and a past going back to the days of the Romans, when the Roman built Watling Street (now the A-5) passed by the town. These days Leighton Buzzard is connected to the adjoining town of Linslade and it's roughly mid-way between Milton Keynes and Luton, it sits near to the Chiltern Hills and has a vital sand quarrying industry.

The History of Leighton Buzzard: It's considered that there had been settlements in or around what's now named Leighton Buzzard long ago in prehistoric times, age-old relics and coinage picked up in the area show evidence of this fact. The ancient Watling Street (erected by the Romans), now termed the A5, passed through the nearby settlements of Hockliffe and Dunstable around about 2,000 yrs ago, and the Romans should have at the very least known of the village at that time.

The Romans were later followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was them who used a market sometime in the 10th Century, and artefacts unearthed suggest that they were residing in the area probably since the 6th Century. The village as it was wasn't described until 906 at which time the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book recognised Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, over time, incorporated a much larger area than just the town alone, and covered the hamlets of Billington, Eggington, Heath & Reach and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the name of the town seems to originated from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" element did not get put in up until the 12th Century at which time the Dean of Lincoln was required to distinguish it from an extra "Leighton" that he had inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be tenanted to a number of tenants through the eras, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who helped Charles I throughout the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard grew even larger through the coming generations and the arrival of a canal and a railway during the 19th Century saw the town develop and evolve. Twenty-first century Leighton Buzzard is a bustling market town which has seen greater development in the past few years.
