Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Factfile:

Location: Bedfordshire, England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Based in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the tranquil town of Leighton Buzzard lays very close to the county boundary between Buckinghamshire and Bedfordshire, on the Grand Union Canal, it has a population close to thirty seven thousand and a story harping back to Roman times, at which time the Roman built A5 (then known as Watling St) passed the town. Today Leighton Buzzard is linked to the adjacent town of Linslade and it's roughly midway between Milton Keynes and Luton, it sits next to the Chiltern Hills (Chilterns) and has a significant quarrying industry (sand).

The History of Leighton Buzzard: It's felt that there existed settlements in or around what is now known as Leighton Buzzard way back in prehistoric times, ancient artefacts and coins stumbled upon near by show evidence of this fact. The age-old Watling Street (built by the Romans), now called the A5, cut through the close by areas of Hockliffe and Dunstable roughly two thousand in years past, and the Romans would have at least been aware of Leighton Buzzard as they passed it.

The Anglo-Saxons followed the Romans, and it was Saxons who used a market in around the 10th Century, and artefacts found suggest that they were inhabiting the neighbourhood almost certainly since the sixth century. The village existing at this time wasn't listed until 906 when the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book described Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, typically, comprised a significantly wider area than simply the town itself, and integrated the hamlets of Billington, Heath & Reach, Stanbridge and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the town's name appears to originated from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" element was not to be added on till the twelfth century after the Dean of Lincoln wanted to distinguish it from a second "Leighton" which existed inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were tenanted to a great many tenants over the ages, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who helped Charles I through the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town carried on growing through the succeeding decades and the appearance of a canal and a railway service in the Nineteenth Century saw the town develop and expand. Current day Leighton Buzzard can be referred to as a prospering market town which has seen improved development in recent times.
