Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Facts for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire, England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Found in the county of Beds, the quiet town of Leighton Buzzard sits right on the border between Buckinghamshire and Bedfordshire, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a population of about 37,000 and a past going back to the era of the Romans, at which time the historical Watling Street (now the A-5) passed by the town. These days Leighton Buzzard is linked to the adjoining town of Linslade and it's about halfway between Milton Keynes (Bucks) and Luton (Bedfordshire), it is placed near to the Chilterns and has a vital quarrying industry (sand).

Leighton Buzzard History: It is considered that there had been settlements in and close to what's now named Leighton Buzzard long ago in prehistoric times, ancient relics and coins uncovered in close proximity give evidence of this fact. The early Watling Street (erected by the Romans), now referred to as the A5, passed through the nearby settlements of Hockliffe and Dunstable some 2,000 years ago, and the Romans would have at the very least been aware of Leighton Buzzard at that time.

The Romans were in turn followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was them who introduced a market sometime in the 10th Century, and artefacts unearthed indicate that they were living in the locale in all probability from the 6th Century. The settlement existing at that time isn't referred to until 906 when the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book specified Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, traditionally, embodied a lot bigger area than only the town itself, and covered the hamlets of Heath & Reach, Stanbridge, Billington and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the town's name appears to originated from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" section was not to be added on till the 12th Century at which time the Dean of Lincoln wanted to distinguish it from an extra "Leighton" that he had inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were let to a great many tenants through the ages, for example the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who supported Charles I throughout the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard carried on growing through the succeeding years and the coming of a railway service and a canal in the Nineteenth Century saw it develop and evolve.
