Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Factfile for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), East of England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Positioned in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the busy town of Leighton Buzzard lies near to the border betwixt Bucks and Beds, on the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a resident population of about 37,000 and a historic past harping back to the Roman period, at which time the historic A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed the town. At present Leighton Buzzard is pretty much connected to the neighbouring town of Linslade and is roughly mid-way between Luton and Milton Keynes, it lies next to the Chilterns (Chiltern Hills) and has a significant quarrying industry (sand).

Leighton Buzzard History: It's felt that there were settlements in and close to what is now named Leighton Buzzard stretching back to unrecorded times, historic relics and coinage found in close proximity show evidence of this. The historical Watling Street (engineered by the Romans), now referred to as the A5, passed through neighbouring Dunstable and Hockliffe about two thousand years ago, and the Romans would have at the very least known of the village as they passed it.

The Anglo-Saxons followed the Romans, and it was Saxons who created a market sometime in the 10th Century, and artefacts unearthed mean that they were inhabiting the neighbourhood in all probability from the 6th Century. The settlement as it was then wasn't cited until 906 when the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book described Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, in times past, covered a significantly greater area than just the town itself, and comprised the hamlets of Billington, Stanbridge, Heath & Reach and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the name seems to come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" portion was not to be applied before the 12th Century when the Dean of Lincoln had to differentiate it from the other "Leighton" which he had inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be leased to numerous tenants over the ages, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who backed Charles I in the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard grew even bigger over the succeeding generations and the arrival of a canal and a railway in the Nineteenth Century saw the town develop and grow. Present day Leighton Buzzard is a flourishing market town which has seen accelerated development in the past several years.
