Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Factfile for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Found in the county of Beds in the East of England, the small town of Leighton Buzzard sits near to the county boundary betwixt Bedfordshire and Bucks, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, the town has a population of approximately 37,000 and a history stretching back to the Roman period, when the early A5 (then known as Watling St) passed by the town. These days Leighton Buzzard is more or less connected to the nearby town of Linslade and it's about midway between Milton Keynes and Luton, it lies close to the Chilterns (Chiltern Hills) and has a vital sand quarrying industry.

The Story of Leighton Buzzard: It's believed that there existed settlements in or around what's now called Leighton Buzzard going back to unrecorded times, old artefacts and coinage stumbled upon nearby show evidence of this. The historic Watling Street (crafted by the Romans), now called the A5, went through the close by areas of Hockliffe and Dunstable roughly 2,000 years ago, and the Romans will have at the very least known of the village at that time.

The Romans were subsequently followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was them who used a market during the tenth century, and artifacts stumbled on show that they were staying in the local area in all likelihood from the 6th Century. The commune as such wasn't discussed until 906 at which time the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) documented Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, traditionally, embraced a far larger area compared to the town itself, and incorporated the hamlets of Heath & Reach, Billington, Stanbridge and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the name is thought to derived from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" component was not to be added on up until the 12th Century after the Dean of Lincoln needed to distinguish it from a different "Leighton" that he had within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were tenanted to a variety of tenants through the eras, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who followed Charles I in the Civil War (1642-1645).
