Set in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the town of Leighton Buzzard is right on the county border in between Bedfordshire and Bucks, on the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a resident population of around 37,000 and a historical past stretching back to the era of the Romans, when the Roman built Watling Street (now the A-5) passed the town. Nowadays Leighton Buzzard is attached to the nearby town of Linslade it is about mid-way between Milton Keynes and Luton, it sits near to the Chilterns (Chiltern Hills) and has a substantial sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard History: It's considered that there were settlements in and close to what's now called Leighton Buzzard stretching back to unrecorded times, age-old artefacts and coins found in the area give evidence of this. The ancient Watling Street (built by the Romans), now named the A5, passed through the nearby settlements of Dunstable and Hockliffe about two thousand in years past, and the Romans will have at the very least known of Leighton Buzzard at that time.

The Romans were followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was they who used a market in around the tenth century, and artefacts uncovered show that they were inhabiting the local area most likely from the sixth century. The commune existing at this time is not mentioned till 906 at which time the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book talked about Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, traditionally, covered a substantially wider area compared to the town itself, and included the settlements of Stanbridge, Billington, Eggington and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the name of the town might have been taken from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" portion was not to be inserted until the 12th Century when the Dean of Lincoln needed to differentiate it from an extra "Leighton" that existed inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be let to a great many tenants through the ages, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who supported Charles I through the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard carried on expanding over the coming decades and the building of a canal and a railway in the Nineteenth Century saw the town develop and develop. Modern Leighton Buzzard can be termed a growing market town that's seen greater development in the last few years.
