Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Factfile:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Based in the county of Beds, the quiet town of Leighton Buzzard stands right on the border in between Buckinghamshire and Bedfordshire, beside the Grand Union Canal, it has a population of approximately 37,000 and a heritage going back to the times of the Romans, when the ancient A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed by the town. At present Leighton Buzzard is pretty much joined to the neighbouring town of Linslade and it's about mid-way between Milton Keynes (Bucks) and Luton (Bedfordshire), it sits near to the Chiltern Hills (Chilterns) and boasts a substantial quarrying industry (sand).

The History of Leighton Buzzard: It's believed that there had been settlements in and close to what is now called Leighton Buzzard going back to unrecorded times, ancient relics and coins picked up nearby show proof of this fact. The age old Watling Street (set up by the Romans), now termed the A5, came through nearby Dunstable and Hockliffe about two thousand yrs ago, and the Romans will have at the very least been aware of the village during those times.

The Anglo-Saxons came after the Romans, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who set up a market in about the tenth century, and antiquities stumbled on suggest that they were inhabiting the area quite likely from the 6th Century. The settlement as it was then is not described till 906 when the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) specified Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, over the years, comprised a way greater area than merely the town by itself, and consisted of the hamlets of Eggington, Billington, Stanbridge and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the name seems to come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" part did not get added until the 12th Century when the Dean of Lincoln wanted to distinguish it from a second "Leighton" which was inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were tenanted to various tenants over the generations, for example the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who followed Charles I through the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town continued to grow throughout the succeeding decades and the appearance of a railway and a canal during the Nineteenth Century saw the town expand and develop. Present day Leighton Buzzard is a busy market town that's seen greater development in the past several years.
