Located in the county of Beds in the East of England, the town of Leighton Buzzard is near the county border between Beds and Bucks, on the Grand Union Canal, the town has a populace of about 37,000 and a historic past extending back to the Roman period, when the early A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed by the town. The History of Leighton Buzzard: It's considered that there existed settlements in or around what's now called Leighton Buzzard stretching back to unrecorded times, early artefacts and coins picked up near by give proof of this fact. The ancient Watling Street (made by the Romans), now identified as the A5, ran through the close by areas of Dunstable and Hockliffe over two thousand yrs ago, and the Romans would have at the very least known of the village at this time.

The Anglo-Saxons followed after the Romans, and it was them who set up the market place during the 10th Century, and artifacts discovered mean that they were settling the area more than likely from the 6th Century. The settlement as it was wasn't mentioned until 906 after the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) mentioned Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, in times past, embodied a substantially wider area than only the town itself, and contained the hamlets of Stanbridge, Billington, Eggington and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the town's name might have come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" part was not appended up until the 12th Century after the Dean of Lincoln wanted to distinguish it from an extra "Leighton" which existed within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were let to an assortment of tenants over the ages, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who helped Charles I through the Civil War (1642-1645).
