Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Factfile:

Location: Bedfordshire, East of England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Based in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the town of Leighton Buzzard lays near to the boundary betwixt Bedfordshire and Bucks, beside the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a population of around 37,000 and a heritage harping back to the Roman era, when the ancient Watling St (now the A-5) passed by the town. Nowadays Leighton Buzzard is linked to the neighbouring town of Linslade and it is roughly midway between Luton (Bedfordshire) and Milton Keynes (Bucks), it is placed very close to the Chilterns (Chiltern Hills) and boasts a substantial quarrying industry (sand).

The History of Leighton Buzzard: It is thought that there had been settlements in and near to what is now named Leighton Buzzard stretching back to unrecorded times, ancient artefacts and coinage picked up in close proximity show proof of this. The olden Watling Street (set up by the Romans), now referred to as the A5, went through the nearby settlements of Dunstable and Hockliffe over two thousand in years past, and the Romans would have at least been aware of the Leighton Buzzard settlement during those times.

The Romans were thereafter followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was they who set up a market in about the tenth century, and artifacts picked up show that they were settling the region in all probability since the 6th Century. The settlement existing then wasn't reported till 906 when the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book named Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, typically, embraced a significantly larger area than only the town by itself, and covered the hamlets of Eggington, Standbridge, Billington and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the name appears to originated from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" portion wasn't put on prior to the 12th Century after the Dean of Lincoln was required to distinguish it from yet another "Leighton" which was within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be leased to a number of tenants through the centuries, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who followed Charles I in the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard carried on expanding over the following years and the arrival of a railway and a canal during the 19th Century saw the town develop and grow. Current day Leighton Buzzard can be described as a successful market town that has seen improved development in the last few years.
