Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Information:

Location: Bedfordshire, East of England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Situated in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the delightful town of Leighton Buzzard sits near to the boundary in between Buckinghamshire and Bedfordshire, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, it has a population close to 37,000 and a story extending back to the era of the Romans, at which time the historical Watling St (now the A-5) passed the town. These days Leighton Buzzard is linked to the adjoining town of Linslade it is approximately mid-way between Luton and Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire), it is found next to the Chiltern Hills (Chilterns) and boasts a substantial sand quarrying industry.

The Story of Leighton Buzzard: It is considered that there existed settlements in or around what's now named Leighton Buzzard long ago in prehistoric times, age-old artefacts and coinage picked up in the area offer evidence of this. The ancient Watling Street (erected by the Romans), now known as the A5, passed through the neighbouring areas of Hockliffe and Dunstable some two thousand yrs ago, and the Romans should have at the very least known of the Leighton Buzzard settlement at this time.

The Anglo-Saxons followed after the Romans, and it was they who set up the market place during the tenth century, and relics discovered suggest that they were dwelling in the neighbourhood in all probability since the 6th Century. The commune existing then was not cited until 906 at which time the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book recognised Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, in times past, comprised a significantly bigger area than only the town by itself, and incorporated the hamlets of Heath & Reach, Eggington, Billington and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the name of the town is thought to come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" section was not to be included until the twelfth century at which time the Dean of Lincoln was required to differentiate it from a different "Leighton" that was within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were leased to an assortment of tenants over the ages, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who followed Charles I throughout the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town continued to grow throughout the succeeding decades and the appearance of a railway line and a canal in the Nineteenth Century saw the town develop and expand. Present day Leighton Buzzard is a growing market town that has seen accelerated development in recent times.
