Found in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the delightful town of Leighton Buzzard lies near to the boundary between Beds and Bucks, on the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a population of about 37,000 and a past stretching back to Roman times, at which time the ancient A5 (then known as Watling St) passed by the town. Nowadays Leighton Buzzard is attached to the adjoining town of Linslade and it's approximately mid-way between Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire) and Luton (Bedfordshire), it is found near the Chiltern Hills and boasts an important quarrying industry (sand).

The Story of Leighton Buzzard: It is considered that there existed settlements in and close to what's now named Leighton Buzzard harping back to prehistoric times, early relics and coins found in close proximity show proof of this fact. The old Watling Street (put up by the Romans), now referred to as the A5, passed through the nearby settlements of Hockliffe and Dunstable roughly 2,000 yrs ago, and the Romans would have at the very least known of the Leighton Buzzard settlement at this time.

The Romans were in turn followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was they who used the market place sometime in the tenth century, and artefacts discovered suggest that they were settling the neighbourhood in all probability from the 6th Century. The commune existing then is not discussed until 906 at which time the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 specified Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, in times past, covered a lot bigger area than only the town by itself, and included the settlements of Billington, Heath & Reach, Stanbridge and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the name seems to originated from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" part wasn't added on until the twelfth century when the Dean of Lincoln needed to distinguish it from a different "Leighton" which was inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be leased to a number of tenants through the ages, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who backed Charles I during the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement grew even bigger over the succeeding years and the construction of a canal and a railway line in the Nineteenth Century saw it develop and grow. Modern Leighton Buzzard is a successful market town which has seen improved development in the last few years.
