Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Information for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire, East of England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Situated within the county of Bedfordshire, the busy town of Leighton Buzzard stands near to the county boundary between Bucks and Beds, on the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a resident population close to thirty seven thousand and a history going back to the Roman era, when the early A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed by the town. These days Leighton Buzzard is pretty much connected to the adjacent town of Linslade and is approximately halfway between Luton and Milton Keynes, it is placed next to the Chiltern Hills (Chilterns) and boasts an important quarrying industry (sand).

The History of Leighton Buzzard: It's considered that there were settlements in or around what's now named Leighton Buzzard going back to unrecorded times, ancient relics and coinage uncovered in the area give evidence of this. The age old Watling Street (fashioned by the Romans), now named the A5, ran through close by Hockliffe and Dunstable some two thousand years back, and the Romans would have at least been aware of the village at that time.

The Romans were in turn followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was they who used the market place in about the 10th Century, and artifacts picked up indicate that they were residing in the locale more than likely since the sixth century. The settlement existing at this time wasn't cited till 906 at which time the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 listed Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, in times past, embodied a considerably bigger area than only the town by itself, and covered the hamlets of Billington, Eggington, Heath & Reach and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the name of the town seems to come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" piece did not get put in until the twelfth century when the Dean of Lincoln had to differentiate it from the other "Leighton" that was within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were tenanted to a great many tenants through the eras, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who backed Charles I during the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town continued to grow during the coming generations and the appearance of a railway line and a canal in the Nineteenth Century saw it grow and develop. Twenty-first century Leighton Buzzard is a thriving market town that's seen increased development in the recent past.
