Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Factfile:

Location: Bedfordshire, East of England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Located in the county of Beds, the tranquil town of Leighton Buzzard lays close to the boundary between Bucks and Bedfordshire, beside the Grand Union Canal, the town has a resident population of approximately 37,000 and a past going back to the days of the Romans, at which time the Roman built Watling Street (now the A-5) passed the town. These days Leighton Buzzard is pretty much joined to the nearby town of Linslade and is roughly midway between Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire) and Luton, it is found next to the Chilterns (Chiltern Hills) and has a vital sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard Historic Past: It's thought that there existed settlements in or around what's now called Leighton Buzzard harping back to unrecorded times, early relics and coins picked up in the area offer evidence of this fact. The early Watling Street (made by the Romans), now identified as the A5, came through the neighbouring settlements of Dunstable and Hockliffe over two thousand in years past, and the Romans would have at least known of Leighton Buzzard at this time.

The Anglo-Saxons followed the Romans, and it was Saxons who set up a market sometime in the tenth century, and antiquities picked up suggest that they were inhabiting the area quite possibly since the 6th Century. The settlement as such isn't listed until 906 after the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book described Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, over time, incorporated a far larger area than only the town by itself, and consisted of the settlements of Eggington, Standbridge, Billington and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the name of the town could quite possibly have come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" section was not to be included until the twelfth century after the Dean of Lincoln found it appropriate to differentiate it from an extra "Leighton" that was within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be tenanted to numerous tenants over the ages, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who backed Charles I during the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town grew even bigger through the following decades and the arrival of a railway and a canal in the Nineteenth Century saw it develop and grow. Today's Leighton Buzzard is a flourishing market town that's seen improved development in recent years.
