Located in the county of Bedfordshire, the smallish town of Leighton Buzzard lays near the boundary betwixt Buckinghamshire and Bedfordshire, beside the Grand Union Canal, it has a population of around 37,000 and a historic past stretching back to the Roman era, when the historical Watling St (now the A-5) passed by the town. The Story of Leighton Buzzard: It is thought that there had been settlements in or around what's now known as Leighton Buzzard way back in prehistoric times, old relics and coins found near by give evidence of this fact. The longstanding Watling Street (built by the Romans), now called the A5, passed through the close by areas of Dunstable and Hockliffe about two thousand yrs ago, and the Romans will have at the very least known of Leighton Buzzard as they passed it.

The Romans were in turn followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was they who used the market place in about the tenth century, and relics picked up mean that they were residing in the region perhaps since the sixth century. The village existing then was not documented till 906 at which time the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book identified Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, typically, incorporated a far larger area than merely the town itself, and consisted of the settlements of Stanbridge, Eggington, Heath & Reach and Billington. The "Leighton" in the name is thought to originated from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" section did not get added on prior to the 12th Century after the Dean of Lincoln needed to distinguish it from a second "Leighton" that was inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be tenanted to various tenants over the eras, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who endorsed Charles I throughout the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town carried on expanding over the coming decades and the construction of a canal and a railway line during the Nineteenth Century saw it grow and develop.
