Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Factfile:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Based in the county of Beds in the East of England, the charming town of Leighton Buzzard lies near the county border between Bucks and Beds, beside the Grand Union Canal, it has a resident population of around 37,000 and a historic past harping back to Roman times, at which time the ancient Watling St (now the A-5) passed the town. Presently Leighton Buzzard is linked to the neighbouring town of Linslade it is roughly halfway between Luton (Beds) and Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire), it sits near to the Chiltern Hills and boasts an important sand quarrying industry.

The Story of Leighton Buzzard: It's felt that there had been settlements in or around what's now named Leighton Buzzard going back to unrecorded times, historic relics and coinage stumbled on in close proximity show proof of this fact. The age old Watling Street (engineered by the Romans), now termed the A5, came through the nearby areas of Hockliffe and Dunstable approximately two thousand in years past, and the Romans will have at the very least been aware of the village during those times.

The Anglo-Saxons followed after the Romans, and it was they who were using the market place in about the tenth century, and artefacts found suggest that they were inhabiting the area perhaps since the 6th Century. The settlement as it was is not cited till 906 when the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book listed Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, historically, embraced a significantly bigger area than simply the town alone, and consisted of the hamlets of Heath & Reach, Billington, Stanbridge and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the name seems to come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" component did not get added before the 12th Century after the Dean of Lincoln wanted to distinguish it from the other "Leighton" which was inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were tenanted to various tenants over the years, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who assisted Charles I throughout the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard grew even larger over the ensuing decades and the arrival of a railway and a canal in the 19th Century saw the town develop and evolve. Today's Leighton Buzzard can be referred to as a blooming market town that's witnessed increased development in the recent past.
