Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Facts:

Location: Bedfordshire, East of England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Located in the county of Bedfordshire, the delightful town of Leighton Buzzard sits near the county border between Beds and Bucks, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a resident population close to 37,000 and a historical past going back to Roman days, when the historical A5 (then known as Watling St) passed by the town. At present Leighton Buzzard is attached to the neighbouring town of Linslade and it is about mid-way between Luton and Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire), it can be found next to the Chilterns and has a substantial sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard History: It is thought that there had been settlements in or around what is now called Leighton Buzzard stretching back to prehistoric times, ancient relics and coinage stumbled on nearby give proof of this. The early Watling Street (set up by the Romans), now termed the A5, ran through the close by towns of Hockliffe and Dunstable over two thousand years back, and the Romans would have at the very least been aware of the Leighton Buzzard settlement at that time.

The Anglo-Saxons came after the Romans, and it was them who used the market place in around the 10th Century, and relics unearthed show that they were settling the region most probably from the 6th Century. The settlement as such is not observed till 906 when the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) identified Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, traditionally, comprised a far wider area than simply the town alone, and covered the settlements of Heath & Reach, Eggington, Billington and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the town's name appears to come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" piece wasn't included until the twelfth century after the Dean of Lincoln wanted to distinguish it from an extra "Leighton" which existed within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were tenanted to a number of tenants over the eras, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who supported Charles I through the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard carried on growing through the coming decades and the building of a railway service and a canal during the 19th Century saw it evolve and develop. Today's Leighton Buzzard can be referred to as a blooming market town which has witnessed accelerated development in the past few years.
