Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Information for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), East of England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Set within the county of Beds in the East of England, the small town of Leighton Buzzard lays near the boundary betwixt Beds and Bucks, beside the Grand Union Canal, the town has a population of around thirty seven thousand and a historic past stretching back to the times of the Romans, at which time the historic A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed the town. Presently Leighton Buzzard is coupled with the adjoining town of Linslade and it's about midway between Luton (Bedfordshire) and Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire), it stands next to the Chilterns and boasts a significant quarrying industry (sand).

Leighton Buzzard Through the Ages: It's considered that there had been settlements in and close to what is now called Leighton Buzzard harping back to prehistoric times, historic artefacts and coins stumbled on in close proximity show evidence of this. The historic Watling Street (set up by the Romans), now known as the A5, came through the nearby areas of Hockliffe and Dunstable some two thousand years back, and the Romans would have at least known of the village at this time.

The Romans were in turn followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was Saxons who introduced a market during the 10th Century, and antiquities picked up suggest that they were settling the area perhaps from the 6th Century. The settlement existing then isn't remarked upon till 906 at which time the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book listed Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, over the years, embodied a considerably bigger area than just the town itself, and included the hamlets of Eggington, Billington, Stanbridge and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the town's name appears to come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" element did not get added until the 12th Century when the Dean of Lincoln wanted to distinguish it from yet another "Leighton" which existed within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were leased to numerous tenants over the years, for example the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who assisted Charles I in the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard grew even bigger over the coming years and the development of a canal and a railway line in the 19th Century saw it develop and evolve. Twenty-first century Leighton Buzzard can be termed a prospering market town which has witnessed improved development in the last few years.
