Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Information for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Based in the county of Bedfordshire, the busy town of Leighton Buzzard lies near the boundary between Beds and Buckinghamshire, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, it has a resident population of around thirty seven thousand and a story going back to the Roman era, at which time the ancient A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed by the town. These days Leighton Buzzard is more or less joined to the adjacent town of Linslade and it is about midway between Luton and Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire), it is placed near the Chiltern Hills (Chilterns) and boasts a vital sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard Through the Ages: It's thought that there had been settlements in or around what is now known as Leighton Buzzard harping back to prehistoric times, historical artefacts and coins uncovered near by offer proof of this fact. The longstanding Watling Street (made by the Romans), now identified as the A5, ran through the close by areas of Dunstable and Hockliffe about 2,000 years ago, and the Romans will have at least been aware of Leighton Buzzard during those times.

The Anglo-Saxons came after the Romans, and it was them who created the market place in around the tenth century, and antiquities stumbled on show that they were residing in the locale almost certainly since the 6th Century. The village existing at this time isn't listed until 906 when the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 specified Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, over time, encompassed a lot wider area than merely the town itself, and contained the settlements of Billington, Heath & Reach, Stanbridge and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the town's name seems to originated from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" part was not to be put on prior to the 12th Century when the Dean of Lincoln needed to distinguish it from a different "Leighton" that was within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were let to a variety of tenants over the ages, for example the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who backed Charles I in the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard continued to grow during the coming generations and the appearance of a canal and a railway service during the 19th Century saw it expand and develop. Contemporary Leighton Buzzard can be described as a successful market town that's witnessed accelerated development in the recent past.
