Based in the county of Bedfordshire, the quiet town of Leighton Buzzard lays close to the county boundary in between Bucks and Beds, on the Grand Union Canal, it has a population close to 37,000 and a past harping back to the Roman era, at which time the ancient Watling St (now the A-5) passed the town. Nowadays Leighton Buzzard is connected to the nearby town of Linslade and it is approximately midway between Milton Keynes (Bucks) and Luton (Bedfordshire), it is found near the Chiltern Hills and boasts a significant quarrying industry (sand).

Leighton Buzzard History: It is thought that there existed settlements in or around what is now called Leighton Buzzard way back in unrecorded times, historic artifacts and coinage uncovered nearby offer evidence of this. The age-old Watling Street (engineered by the Romans), now termed the A5, passed through the nearby areas of Dunstable and Hockliffe approximately two thousand in years past, and the Romans will have at least been aware of the village as they passed it.

The Anglo-Saxons followed the Romans, and it was they who were using a market in around the 10th Century, and artefacts found show that they were residing in the vicinity perhaps from the 6th Century. The commune as it was then wasn't described till 906 at which time the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book named Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, historically, embraced a considerably larger area than only the town alone, and consisted of the settlements of Heath & Reach, Eggington, Billington and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the town's name appears to originated from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" element did not get inserted up until the twelfth century after the Dean of Lincoln needed to distinguish it from another "Leighton" that he had within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were leased to numerous tenants through the years, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who supported Charles I throughout the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town grew even larger through the succeeding years and the coming of a railway service and a canal in the Nineteenth Century saw the town develop and develop. Contemporary Leighton Buzzard is a bustling market town that has seen improved development in the past few years.
