Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Factfile for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), East of England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Found in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the charming town of Leighton Buzzard lies near to the border betwixt Beds and Buckinghamshire, beside the Grand Union Canal, it has a population of about 37,000 and a past going back to Roman times, at which time the early A5 (then known as Watling St) passed by the town. Presently Leighton Buzzard is attached to the nearby town of Linslade and it is about halfway between Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire) and Luton, it is situated close to the Chilterns (Chiltern Hills) and has a significant quarrying industry (sand).

Leighton Buzzard Historic Past: It is considered that there existed settlements in and close to what's now named Leighton Buzzard way back in unrecorded times, early artifacts and coins uncovered in close proximity offer evidence of this fact. The longstanding Watling Street (crafted by the Romans), now named the A5, cut through nearby Dunstable and Hockliffe roughly 2,000 years ago, and the Romans will have at the very least been aware of the Leighton Buzzard settlement at this time.

The Romans were in turn followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who were using the market place in around the 10th Century, and artefacts found mean that they were settling the vicinity quite likely since the 6th Century. The village as it was is not discussed till 906 at which time the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book described Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, over time, embodied a much larger area than simply the town by itself, and covered the hamlets of Eggington, Heath & Reach, Billington and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the town's name appears to derived from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" element did not get added on prior to the 12th Century after the Dean of Lincoln wanted to distinguish it from the other "Leighton" which he had inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be tenanted to a great many tenants through the years, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who endorsed Charles I through the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town carried on expanding during the following generations and the arrival of a canal and a railway service in the 19th Century saw the town develop and grow. Contemporary Leighton Buzzard is a prosperous market town that's seen improved development in the past few years.
