Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Factfile:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Located in the county of Bedfordshire, the smallish town of Leighton Buzzard sits close to the boundary in between Buckinghamshire and Bedfordshire, on the Grand Union Canal, the town has a resident population of approximately thirty seven thousand and a historic past extending back to the Roman era, when the Roman built Watling St (now the A-5) passed by the town. Today Leighton Buzzard is more or less connected to the nearby town of Linslade it is about halfway between Luton and Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire), it is situated very close to the Chilterns and boasts an important sand quarrying industry.

The Story of Leighton Buzzard: It is thought that there existed settlements in and close to what's now known as Leighton Buzzard going back to unrecorded times, ancient artifacts and coinage found nearby show evidence of this fact. The olden Watling Street (fashioned by the Romans), now named the A5, ran through the neighbouring areas of Hockliffe and Dunstable around about 2,000 yrs ago, and the Romans would have at least known of the village as they passed it.

The Romans were in turn followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was Saxons who set up a market during the tenth century, and antiquities found show that they were residing in the local area possibly from the sixth century. The commune existing then wasn't mentioned till 906 when the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 mentioned Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, in times past, embodied a significantly larger area than just the town alone, and contained the settlements of Eggington, Standbridge, Billington and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the town's name seems to come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" component wasn't included before the 12th Century at which time the Dean of Lincoln needed to differentiate it from another "Leighton" which he had inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be tenanted to many different tenants through the years, for example the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who followed Charles I during the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard carried on expanding throughout the succeeding generations and the development of a canal and a railway line in the 19th Century saw the town develop and evolve.
