Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Factfile for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire, England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Situated in the county of Bedfordshire, the bustling town of Leighton Buzzard stands very close to the county boundary between Beds and Bucks, on the Grand Union Canal, the town has a population close to thirty seven thousand and a heritage harping back to the times of the Romans, at which time the historic Watling Street (now the A-5) passed the town. Today Leighton Buzzard is more or less connected to the adjacent town of Linslade and it's about halfway between Milton Keynes (Bucks) and Luton (Beds), it stands next to the Chiltern Hills and has an important sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard History: It's believed that there existed settlements in or around what's now known as Leighton Buzzard harping back to prehistoric times, old artifacts and coins found near by show proof of this fact. The olden Watling Street (established by the Romans), now called the A5, ran through the neighbouring areas of Hockliffe and Dunstable about two thousand in years past, and the Romans would have at least known of the Leighton Buzzard settlement at this time.

The Anglo-Saxons came after the Romans, and it was Saxons who used the market place during the 10th Century, and artefacts stumbled on show that they were inhabiting the neighbourhood quite possibly since the 6th Century. The settlement existing at this time was not reported until 906 at which time the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book recognized Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, in times past, embraced a far larger area than simply the town alone, and contained the settlements of Billington, Stanbridge, Heath & Reach and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the town's name appears to come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" portion wouldn't be inserted till the twelfth century after the Dean of Lincoln found it imperative to differentiate it from another "Leighton" which existed within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be tenanted to several tenants over the years, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who backed Charles I in the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement continued to grow during the coming decades and the establishing of of a canal and a railway line during the 19th Century saw it grow and develop. Current day Leighton Buzzard can be described as a prosperous market town which has witnessed greater development in modern times.
