Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Facts for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire, England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Based in the county of Beds in the East of England, the market town of Leighton Buzzard lays near to the boundary betwixt Bucks and Beds, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, the town has a resident population of about thirty seven thousand and a story stretching back to Roman days, when the historic Watling St (now the A-5) passed by the town. Today Leighton Buzzard is attached to the adjacent town of Linslade and it's about mid-way between Luton and Milton Keynes (Bucks), it can be found next to the Chilterns (Chiltern Hills) and has an important quarrying industry (sand).

Leighton Buzzard Through the Ages: It is believed that there were settlements in and near to what's now known as Leighton Buzzard long ago in prehistoric times, old artefacts and coinage found near by give evidence of this. The old Watling Street (established by the Romans), now known as the A5, cut through the close by towns of Dunstable and Hockliffe roughly 2,000 years ago, and the Romans will have at the very least been aware of the Leighton Buzzard settlement as they passed it.

The Romans were in turn followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was they who used a market sometime in the tenth century, and artifacts found imply that they were residing in the region in all probability from the 6th Century. The settlement as it was then wasn't observed until 906 after the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book outlined Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, over time, encompassed a way larger area than simply the town itself, and comprised the hamlets of Stanbridge, Billington, Eggington and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the name seems to come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" component wouldn't be applied till the 12th Century at which time the Dean of Lincoln had to differentiate it from yet another "Leighton" which he had inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were tenanted to several tenants through the ages, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who supported Charles I during the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement grew even larger throughout the succeeding decades and the appearance of a railway service and a canal in the Nineteenth Century saw the town develop and grow. Modern day Leighton Buzzard can be described as a successful market town that has seen increased development in the last few years.
