Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Facts:

Location: Bedfordshire, East of England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Found in the county of Beds, the smallish town of Leighton Buzzard is right on the county border between Bucks and Bedfordshire, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, it has a population of approximately 37,000 and a historic past stretching back to the times of the Romans, when the Roman built Watling St (now the A-5) passed by the town. At present Leighton Buzzard is attached to the nearby town of Linslade and it's approximately mid-way between Milton Keynes (Bucks) and Luton (Bedfordshire), it lies near to the Chilterns and has a vital quarrying industry (sand).

Leighton Buzzard Through the Ages: It is thought that there existed settlements in and close to what is now known as Leighton Buzzard way back in unrecorded times, old artifacts and coins discovered in close proximity give proof of this. The olden Watling Street (erected by the Romans), now named the A5, passed through the nearby towns of Dunstable and Hockliffe about 2,000 years ago, and the Romans will have at least known of the village as they passed it.

The Anglo-Saxons followed the Romans, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who used the market place sometime in the tenth century, and artifacts discovered suggest that they were residing in the vicinity most likely from the sixth century. The settlement as it was then isn't documented until 906 when the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) reported Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, historically, covered a way larger area compared to the town by itself, and consisted of the hamlets of Heath & Reach, Billington, Stanbridge and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the name may possibly have come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" portion wouldn't be put on before the twelfth century at which time the Dean of Lincoln needed to distinguish it from yet another "Leighton" which existed within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were leased to several tenants through the ages, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who endorsed Charles I through the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard grew even bigger during the ensuing generations and the arrival of a canal and a railway in the Nineteenth Century saw it develop and grow. Today's Leighton Buzzard is a prosperous market town which has seen increased development in current times.
