Leighton Buzzard Through the Ages: It's considered that there were settlements in or around what's now known as Leighton Buzzard going back to unrecorded times, historical relics and coinage discovered near by give evidence of this fact. The age old Watling Street (set up by the Romans), now referred to as the A5, ran through the neighbouring areas of Dunstable and Hockliffe about two thousand in years past, and the Romans will have at least known of the Leighton Buzzard settlement as they passed it.

The Anglo-Saxons followed the Romans, and it was them who created a market sometime in the tenth century, and relics unearthed denote that they were settling the area very likely since the sixth century. The settlement existing then wasn't observed till 906 after the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book specified Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, typically, encompassed a significantly greater area than just the town alone, and consisted of the hamlets of Eggington, Billington, Stanbridge and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the name seems to come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" section was not to be put in till the twelfth century at which time the Dean of Lincoln found it important to distinguish it from the other "Leighton" that was within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were tenanted to many different tenants through the eras, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who helped Charles I through the English Civil War (1642-1645).
