Leighton Buzzard Through the Ages: It is believed that there had been settlements in and close to what is now named Leighton Buzzard harping back to prehistoric times, early artifacts and coins uncovered in the area show evidence of this. The ancient Watling Street (made by the Romans), now named the A5, cut through the nearby areas of Hockliffe and Dunstable around about 2,000 in years past, and the Romans will have at the very least known of the Leighton Buzzard settlement at this time.

The Romans were in turn followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was Saxons who were using a market in around the 10th Century, and artefacts found indicate that they were staying in the local area most probably since the sixth century. The commune as it was then is not reported until 906 after the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 recognised Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, traditionally, comprised a far larger area than simply the town itself, and contained the hamlets of Billington, Stanbridge, Heath & Reach and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the town's name appears to been taken from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" portion wouldn't be put on up until the 12th Century when the Dean of Lincoln was required to distinguish it from yet another "Leighton" that he had within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be let to several tenants over the centuries, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who backed Charles I through the Civil War (1642-1645).
