Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Factfile:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), East of England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Based in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the delightful town of Leighton Buzzard lies near the county border between Bedfordshire and Buckinghamshire, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, the town has a population close to 37,000 and a historical past going back to Roman times, at which time the historical A5 (then known as Watling St) passed the town. Presently Leighton Buzzard is linked to the adjacent town of Linslade and is roughly halfway between Milton Keynes and Luton, it stands close to the Chilterns (Chiltern Hills) and boasts an important sand quarrying industry.

The Story of Leighton Buzzard: It's considered that there were settlements in and close to what is now named Leighton Buzzard stretching back to unrecorded times, old artifacts and coins discovered in close proximity offer proof of this. The early Watling Street (built by the Romans), now identified as the A5, went through nearby Hockliffe and Dunstable about 2,000 years ago, and the Romans would have at the very least known of the Leighton Buzzard settlement during those times.

The Romans were in turn followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was Saxons who used the market place in around the 10th Century, and relics stumbled upon suggest that they were dwelling in the locale quite likely from the sixth century. The settlement as such isn't listed until 906 when the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book recognised Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, traditionally, comprised a significantly larger area than only the town itself, and consisted of the settlements of Heath & Reach, Billington, Stanbridge and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the town's name is thought to come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" component was not to be applied until the 12th Century after the Dean of Lincoln needed to differentiate it from another "Leighton" that was inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were leased to numerous tenants over the years, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who assisted Charles I through the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town continued to grow during the following decades and the construction of a canal and a railway in the 19th Century saw it develop and develop. Today's Leighton Buzzard is a booming market town which has seen greater development in the past few years.
