Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Information for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire, England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Set in the county of Bedfordshire, the smallish town of Leighton Buzzard sits near to the county boundary between Beds and Bucks, beside the Grand Union Canal, it has a populace of around thirty seven thousand and a history harping back to the times of the Romans, when the historical Watling St (now the A-5) passed by the town. At present Leighton Buzzard is pretty much connected to the adjoining town of Linslade and it is about midway between Luton and Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire), it stands next to the Chiltern Hills and boasts an important quarrying industry (sand).

Leighton Buzzard Through the Ages: It's believed that there existed settlements in and near to what's now called Leighton Buzzard long ago in unrecorded times, age-old relics and coinage discovered in the area offer evidence of this. The early Watling Street (engineered by the Romans), now termed the A5, went through the close by towns of Hockliffe and Dunstable some 2,000 years back, and the Romans should have at least been aware of Leighton Buzzard as they passed it.

The Anglo-Saxons followed after the Romans, and it was Saxons who introduced the market place in about the 10th Century, and artefacts stumbled upon show that they were residing in the locale probably since the sixth century. The commune as it was then is not reported until 906 at which time the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 identified Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, historically, covered a lot bigger area than only the town itself, and incorporated the hamlets of Heath & Reach, Eggington, Billington and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the name of the town appears to come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" part wasn't added prior to the 12th Century after the Dean of Lincoln wanted to differentiate it from a different "Leighton" that was within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were leased to a number of tenants over the eras, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who backed Charles I throughout the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town continued to grow throughout the ensuing years and the appearance of a railway and a canal during the Nineteenth Century saw the town evolve and develop. Present day Leighton Buzzard is a successful market town that's witnessed improved development in recent times.
