Found in the county of Beds in the East of England, the small town of Leighton Buzzard is very close to the county border in between Bedfordshire and Buckinghamshire, beside the Grand Union Canal, it has a population of around thirty seven thousand and a heritage going back to Roman days, when the early Watling St (now the A-5) passed the town. Leighton Buzzard History: It's thought that there existed settlements in and near to what's now called Leighton Buzzard harping back to prehistoric times, early artifacts and coins stumbled on nearby give evidence of this. The historic Watling Street (established by the Romans), now called the A5, ran through nearby Dunstable and Hockliffe over two thousand yrs ago, and the Romans will have at least been aware of the Leighton Buzzard settlement as they passed it.

The Romans were followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was Saxons who introduced a market sometime in the 10th Century, and artifacts discovered suggest that they were living in the region probably from the sixth century. The settlement existing then is not reported until 906 at which time the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 reported Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, in the past, comprised a considerably bigger area compared to the town alone, and comprised the settlements of Eggington, Heath & Reach, Billington and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the town's name appears to been taken from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" element was not put in up until the 12th Century after the Dean of Lincoln was required to differentiate it from yet another "Leighton" which existed within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were leased to an assortment of tenants over the generations, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who followed Charles I throughout the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town carried on growing during the ensuing years and the arrival of a canal and a railway service during the 19th Century saw the town evolve and develop. Twenty-first century Leighton Buzzard is a prospering market town that has witnessed greater development in the recent past.
