The early Watling Street (crafted by the Romans), now known as the A5, passed through the nearby towns of Hockliffe and Dunstable around about two thousand yrs ago, and the Romans will have at least known of the Leighton Buzzard settlement as they passed it.

The Romans were ultimately followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who set up the market place sometime in the tenth century, and relics found suggest that they were settling the local area undoubtedly since the 6th Century. The commune as it was wasn't reported till 906 when the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 talked about Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, traditionally, comprised a far greater area than just the town itself, and covered the settlements of Eggington, Standbridge, Billington and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the town's name will have come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" piece did not get added before the twelfth century after the Dean of Lincoln wanted to differentiate it from the other "Leighton" that existed inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were let to many different tenants over the ages, for example the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who supported Charles I in the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town grew even larger over the succeeding years and the building of a railway service and a canal during the Nineteenth Century saw it expand and develop.
