Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Information for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Located in the county of Bedfordshire, the town of Leighton Buzzard lays very near to the border in between Bucks and Beds, beside the Grand Union Canal, the town has a resident population of about thirty seven thousand and a history harping back to the days of the Romans, when the historic A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed the town. Today Leighton Buzzard is attached to the nearby town of Linslade and it is approximately halfway between Luton and Milton Keynes (Bucks), it lays near the Chiltern Hills and boasts a vital quarrying industry (sand).

Leighton Buzzard History: It's believed that there existed settlements in and near to what is now known as Leighton Buzzard going back to prehistoric times, historic artefacts and coinage unearthed in close proximity offer evidence of this fact. The age old Watling Street (built by the Romans), now termed the A5, passed through the nearby towns of Hockliffe and Dunstable some two thousand years ago, and the Romans will have at the very least known of the village during those times.

The Romans were in turn followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was them who used the market place during the 10th Century, and artefacts uncovered suggest that they were inhabiting the neighbourhood probably since the sixth century. The settlement existing at this time is not remarked upon until 906 after the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book identified Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, in times past, encompassed a much greater area than just the town alone, and integrated the settlements of Eggington, Billington, Stanbridge and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the name of the town seems to been taken from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" section did not get appended until the 12th Century when the Dean of Lincoln was required to differentiate it from another "Leighton" which was inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be tenanted to many different tenants over the ages, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who endorsed Charles I in the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town carried on expanding during the succeeding years and the appearance of a railway service and a canal during the 19th Century saw it develop and expand. Present day Leighton Buzzard is a growing market town which has witnessed increased development in the past few decades.
