Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Factfile:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Found in the county of Bedfordshire, the town of Leighton Buzzard is right on the county border betwixt Bedfordshire and Bucks, beside the Grand Union Canal, the town has a resident population of approximately thirty seven thousand and a history going back to the Roman era, at which time the early Watling Street (now the A-5) passed by the town. Today Leighton Buzzard is attached to the adjacent town of Linslade and it is about mid-way between Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire) and Luton (Beds), it is found next to the Chiltern Hills (Chilterns) and has an important sand quarrying industry.

The Story of Leighton Buzzard: It's felt that there had been settlements in or around what's now called Leighton Buzzard stretching back to unrecorded times, ancient artefacts and coins picked up in the area offer proof of this fact. The historical Watling Street (set up by the Romans), now called the A5, passed through close by Hockliffe and Dunstable around about two thousand yrs ago, and the Romans will have at least been aware of Leighton Buzzard during those times.

The Anglo-Saxons followed after the Romans, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who were using a market during the 10th Century, and relics found suggest that they were settling the local area most likely from the sixth century. The commune as such was not referred to until 906 when the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) named Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, in times past, encompassed a substantially bigger area than merely the town by itself, and consisted of the hamlets of Billington, Heath & Reach, Stanbridge and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the town's name is thought to derived from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" section was not to be applied until the 12th Century when the Dean of Lincoln had to differentiate it from a different "Leighton" which was inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be let to numerous tenants through the ages, for example the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who backed Charles I throughout the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement carried on growing through the coming years and the establishing of of a canal and a railway in the 19th Century saw it develop and evolve. Twenty-first century Leighton Buzzard can be referred to as a growing market town that has witnessed accelerated development in recent years.
