Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Information:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Based in the county of Bedfordshire, the quiet town of Leighton Buzzard sits close to the county border in between Bucks and Bedfordshire, on the Grand Union Canal, it has a populace of approximately thirty seven thousand and a historical past going back to the Roman era, when the early Watling St (now the A-5) passed the town. At present Leighton Buzzard is attached to the nearby town of Linslade and it is about midway between Luton (Beds) and Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire), it can be found very close to the Chilterns (Chiltern Hills) and boasts an important sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard History: It's believed that there were settlements in and near to what's now named Leighton Buzzard stretching back to unrecorded times, early artefacts and coins picked up in the area give evidence of this. The historical Watling Street (erected by the Romans), now identified as the A5, passed through the nearby areas of Hockliffe and Dunstable around 2,000 yrs ago, and the Romans should have at least known of the Leighton Buzzard settlement as they passed it.

The Romans were followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was Saxons who used a market in around the 10th Century, and artifacts unearthed show that they were inhabiting the vicinity most likely from the 6th Century. The village as such was not mentioned until 906 when the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book recognized Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, traditionally, embodied a substantially bigger area than only the town itself, and consisted of the settlements of Stanbridge, Eggington, Heath & Reach and Billington. The "Leighton" in the town's name may likely have originated from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" component did not get included up until the twelfth century when the Dean of Lincoln was required to differentiate it from an extra "Leighton" that he had inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were leased to various tenants over the years, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who assisted Charles I during the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard carried on expanding throughout the coming years and the arrival of a railway line and a canal during the 19th Century saw the town develop and evolve. Contemporary Leighton Buzzard can be described as a growing market town that has seen accelerated development in the past several years.
