Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Information for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Found in the county of Beds, the smallish town of Leighton Buzzard stands very close to the boundary in between Beds and Bucks, on the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a population of about thirty seven thousand and a historic past harping back to Roman days, at which time the early Watling Street (now the A-5) passed the town. Nowadays Leighton Buzzard is attached to the adjacent town of Linslade and it's roughly mid-way between Luton and Milton Keynes, it is placed near to the Chiltern Hills (Chilterns) and boasts a significant quarrying industry (sand).

The History of Leighton Buzzard: It is considered that there existed settlements in and close to what is now called Leighton Buzzard harping back to prehistoric times, historical relics and coins picked up in the area give proof of this fact. The olden Watling Street (erected by the Romans), now referred to as the A5, passed through the neighbouring areas of Dunstable and Hockliffe approximately two thousand yrs ago, and the Romans would have at least known of Leighton Buzzard at that time.

The Anglo-Saxons came after the Romans, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who introduced a market in around the 10th Century, and artefacts discovered denote that they were inhabiting the region quite possibly since the sixth century. The settlement existing at this time was not mentioned until 906 at which time the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 specified Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, typically, embraced a considerably bigger area than just the town alone, and comprised the settlements of Stanbridge, Eggington, Heath & Reach and Billington. The "Leighton" in the town's name appears to come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" element wouldn't be included up until the twelfth century at which time the Dean of Lincoln needed to distinguish it from an extra "Leighton" that existed inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were let to various tenants over the years, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who endorsed Charles I through the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town continued to grow over the succeeding years and the arrival of a canal and a railway line in the Nineteenth Century saw the town expand and develop. Today's Leighton Buzzard can be described as a bustling market town that's seen accelerated development in the last few years.
