Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Information for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), East of England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Situated in the county of Bedfordshire, the quiet town of Leighton Buzzard sits right on the boundary between Buckinghamshire and Beds, beside the Grand Union Canal, the town has a resident population close to 37,000 and a story going back to the Roman period, at which time the early A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed the town. These days Leighton Buzzard is pretty much joined to the neighbouring town of Linslade and is roughly mid-way between Milton Keynes (Bucks) and Luton, it sits next to the Chilterns (Chiltern Hills) and boasts a significant sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard Historic Past: It's believed that there existed settlements in or around what is now known as Leighton Buzzard stretching back to prehistoric times, ancient artifacts and coinage uncovered near by offer proof of this. The ancient Watling Street (built by the Romans), now named the A5, ran through the neighbouring settlements of Dunstable and Hockliffe about two thousand yrs ago, and the Romans would have at least been aware of the Leighton Buzzard settlement during those times.

The Romans were thereafter followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was them who set up a market in around the tenth century, and artifacts stumbled on suggest that they were settling the neighbourhood perhaps from the 6th Century. The settlement existing at this time isn't observed till 906 at which time the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book specified Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, over time, encompassed a considerably larger area than just the town by itself, and comprised the settlements of Stanbridge, Heath & Reach, Eggington and BIllington. The "Leighton" in the town's name is thought to come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" piece was not added on prior to the 12th Century after the Dean of Lincoln was required to differentiate it from the other "Leighton" which was inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be let to a variety of tenants through the years, for example the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who backed Charles I in the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town carried on growing throughout the coming decades and the appearance of a canal and a railway line in the Nineteenth Century saw the town expand and develop. Today's Leighton Buzzard is a growing market town which has witnessed increased development in the past few years.
