Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Facts:

Location: Bedfordshire, England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Based in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the tranquil town of Leighton Buzzard lays near to the county boundary in between Bucks and Beds, beside the Grand Union Canal, it has a resident population close to thirty seven thousand and a heritage extending back to the Roman period, at which time the ancient Watling St (now the A-5) passed the town. Presently Leighton Buzzard is linked to the neighbouring town of Linslade it is about halfway between Luton and Milton Keynes, it lies next to the Chilterns and boasts a vital quarrying industry (sand).

The Story of Leighton Buzzard: It is believed that there had been settlements in and near to what is now called Leighton Buzzard harping back to unrecorded times, age-old artifacts and coinage stumbled upon in close proximity give evidence of this fact. The longstanding Watling Street (fashioned by the Romans), now named the A5, came through the close by settlements of Hockliffe and Dunstable roughly 2,000 in years past, and the Romans would have at least known of the Leighton Buzzard settlement at this time.

The Romans were in turn followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who introduced a market in around the tenth century, and artefacts stumbled on show that they were residing in the area almost certainly from the 6th Century. The settlement existing at this time wasn't observed till 906 when the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book described Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, traditionally, incorporated a far bigger area than just the town by itself, and included the hamlets of Eggington, Heath & Reach, Billington and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the town's name is thought to originated from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" component wouldn't be added on before the 12th Century at which time the Dean of Lincoln had to differentiate it from a second "Leighton" that existed inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be leased to numerous tenants through the ages, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who backed Charles I through the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town continued to grow through the succeeding decades and the establishing of of a railway and a canal in the 19th Century saw it develop and expand. Present day Leighton Buzzard can be referred to as a flourishing market town which has seen improved development in the last few years.
