Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Information:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), East of England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Set in the county of Beds, the market town of Leighton Buzzard stands near the border betwixt Bucks and Bedfordshire, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a populace close to 37,000 and a story going back to Roman times, when the historic Watling St (now the A-5) passed the town. Nowadays Leighton Buzzard is pretty much connected to the adjoining town of Linslade and it's about mid-way between Luton and Milton Keynes, it lays next to the Chilterns and has a substantial sand quarrying industry.

The Story of Leighton Buzzard: It's thought that there had been settlements in or around what's now known as Leighton Buzzard harping back to prehistoric times, early artefacts and coins discovered in close proximity offer proof of this. The olden Watling Street (set up by the Romans), now identified as the A5, passed through the neighbouring areas of Dunstable and Hockliffe some two thousand yrs ago, and the Romans should have at the very least been aware of the village at this time.

The Romans were followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was Saxons who used a market sometime in the tenth century, and antiquities found suggest that they were settling the area almost certainly since the 6th Century. The commune existing at this time is not mentioned until 906 when the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 documented Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, over time, embraced a lot greater area than only the town itself, and contained the settlements of Heath & Reach, Billington, Stanbridge and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the name seems to originated from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" portion wasn't put on until the 12th Century at which time the Dean of Lincoln wanted to distinguish it from an extra "Leighton" which existed within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be leased to a variety of tenants through the centuries, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who helped Charles I in the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town grew even larger during the succeeding years and the appearance of a canal and a railway service in the Nineteenth Century saw it expand and develop. Modern Leighton Buzzard is a blooming market town which has seen improved development in current times.
