Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Factfile for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Set in the county of Bedfordshire, the quiet town of Leighton Buzzard lies right on the border between Buckinghamshire and Bedfordshire, beside the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a population of approximately 37,000 and a heritage stretching back to the Roman era, at which time the historical A5 (then known as Watling St) passed the town. At present Leighton Buzzard is coupled with the adjacent town of Linslade and it's roughly halfway between Luton and Milton Keynes, it lies close to the Chiltern Hills (Chilterns) and boasts a vital sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard Historic Past: It's thought that there had been settlements in or around what is now known as Leighton Buzzard way back in prehistoric times, ancient artefacts and coinage picked up in the area offer proof of this. The old Watling Street (established by the Romans), now called the A5, ran through the neighbouring settlements of Dunstable and Hockliffe approximately two thousand years back, and the Romans would have at the very least been aware of the Leighton Buzzard settlement at that time.

The Anglo-Saxons followed after the Romans, and it was they who used the market place during the tenth century, and artefacts found suggest that they were residing in the region quite possibly since the 6th Century. The commune as such isn't observed until 906 when the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book documented Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, in the past, incorporated a significantly wider area than just the town by itself, and incorporated the settlements of Eggington, Billington, Stanbridge and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the town's name appears to come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" section wasn't inserted before the twelfth century at which time the Dean of Lincoln found it appropriate to differentiate it from a second "Leighton" which existed inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were tenanted to a number of tenants through the centuries, for example the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who backed Charles I throughout the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town carried on expanding over the following generations and the coming of a canal and a railway line during the 19th Century saw it develop and develop. Today's Leighton Buzzard is a successful market town that's witnessed improved development in recent years.
