Based in the county of Bedfordshire, the tranquil town of Leighton Buzzard is very close to the border in between Buckinghamshire and Bedfordshire, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, the town has a population of around thirty seven thousand and a past harping back to the days of the Romans, at which time the historic A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed by the town. At present Leighton Buzzard is more or less connected to the adjoining town of Linslade it is about halfway between Luton and Milton Keynes (Bucks), it lies very close to the Chilterns and has a significant quarrying industry (sand).

The History of Leighton Buzzard: It is considered that there existed settlements in and near to what's now known as Leighton Buzzard stretching back to unrecorded times, historic relics and coinage found near by show evidence of this fact. The ancient Watling Street (built by the Romans), now named the A5, passed through the nearby areas of Dunstable and Hockliffe around about two thousand in years past, and the Romans will have at the very least known of the Leighton Buzzard settlement as they passed it.

The Romans were in turn followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was them who used a market during the tenth century, and artefacts found suggest that they were residing in the neighbourhood most probably since the 6th Century. The settlement as such wasn't referred to until 906 at which time the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book mentioned Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, over the years, embodied a substantially greater area than simply the town itself, and covered the settlements of Eggington, Standbridge, Billington and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the name appears to come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" portion was not inserted till the twelfth century when the Dean of Lincoln wanted to differentiate it from a second "Leighton" that existed inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were leased to a number of tenants over the generations, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who supported Charles I throughout the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard continued to grow through the following decades and the coming of a railway line and a canal during the 19th Century saw the town develop and expand.
