Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Factfile:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), East of England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Set within the county of Beds, the market town of Leighton Buzzard lays right on the county boundary betwixt Beds and Bucks, on the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a population of about 37,000 and a historic past going back to the Roman era, when the early A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed by the town. Today Leighton Buzzard is connected to the neighbouring town of Linslade it is roughly midway between Milton Keynes (Bucks) and Luton (Bedfordshire), it is found near to the Chiltern Hills (Chilterns) and boasts a vital sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard Through the Ages: It is considered that there had been settlements in or around what is now called Leighton Buzzard stretching back to prehistoric times, early relics and coins stumbled on in the area give proof of this. The early Watling Street (made by the Romans), now named the A5, passed through the neighbouring areas of Dunstable and Hockliffe about two thousand years ago, and the Romans will have at least known of Leighton Buzzard as they passed it.

The Romans were ultimately followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was them who used the market place in around the 10th Century, and antiquities uncovered suggest that they were settling the vicinity quite possibly since the 6th Century. The village as such is not documented until 906 at which time the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book mentioned Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, in the past, incorporated a way greater area than only the town by itself, and contained the hamlets of Stanbridge, Billington, Eggington and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the name is thought to come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" portion was not put on before the 12th Century after the Dean of Lincoln needed to differentiate it from yet another "Leighton" which was within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be let to many different tenants through the eras, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who followed Charles I through the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard continued to grow during the ensuing decades and the appearance of a canal and a railway line in the Nineteenth Century saw it develop and expand. Modern Leighton Buzzard can be termed a successful market town that's witnessed increased development in the past several years.
