Found in the county of Beds in the East of England, the busy town of Leighton Buzzard sits very near to the county boundary in between Beds and Bucks, on the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a population of approximately 37,000 and a past extending back to the era of the Romans, when the early A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed by the town. Today Leighton Buzzard is connected to the neighbouring town of Linslade and is roughly midway between Milton Keynes (Bucks) and Luton, it can be found next to the Chilterns (Chiltern Hills) and boasts a vital quarrying industry (sand).

Leighton Buzzard History: It's considered that there had been settlements in or around what is now named Leighton Buzzard long ago in prehistoric times, early artefacts and coins uncovered nearby offer evidence of this fact. The age old Watling Street (erected by the Romans), now identified as the A5, came through close by Dunstable and Hockliffe about two thousand years back, and the Romans will have at the very least known of Leighton Buzzard during those times.

The Romans were later followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who were using a market sometime in the tenth century, and artifacts discovered show that they were dwelling in the area possibly from the sixth century. The commune existing at this time isn't mentioned until 906 after the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book talked about Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, over the years, embodied a substantially larger area than simply the town alone, and included the hamlets of Stanbridge, Billington, Eggington and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the town's name is thought to been taken from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" portion did not get included till the 12th Century when the Dean of Lincoln was required to differentiate it from a second "Leighton" that existed within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be leased to a number of tenants over the centuries, for example the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who supported Charles I through the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement grew even larger during the coming decades and the appearance of a canal and a railway line in the 19th Century saw the town develop and grow. Current day Leighton Buzzard can be termed a booming market town that's seen greater development in modern times.
