Leighton Buzzard Facts:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), East of England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Located in the county of Beds in the East of England, the delightful town of Leighton Buzzard stands right on the county border between Bedfordshire and Buckinghamshire, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, it has a population close to 37,000 and a past extending back to the days of the Romans, when the early Watling Street (now the A-5) passed the town. Nowadays Leighton Buzzard is pretty much joined to the nearby town of Linslade and it is about halfway between Milton Keynes and Luton, it sits near to the Chiltern Hills (Chilterns) and boasts a significant quarrying industry (sand).

Leighton Buzzard Historic Past: It is considered that there were settlements in and near to what's now known as Leighton Buzzard going back to prehistoric times, ancient artifacts and coinage unearthed nearby show proof of this fact. The ancient Watling Street (put up by the Romans), now called the A5, passed through the nearby settlements of Dunstable and Hockliffe approximately two thousand years ago, and the Romans would have at the very least been aware of the Leighton Buzzard settlement during those times.

The Anglo-Saxons followed the Romans, and it was Saxons who were using the market place in around the 10th Century, and artifacts found reveal that they were residing in the neighbourhood probably since the sixth century. The commune as it was then was not referred to until 906 when the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) documented Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, traditionally, embraced a way wider area than just the town itself, and incorporated the hamlets of Billington, Heath & Reach, Stanbridge and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the name appears to derived from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" portion did not get appended prior to the twelfth century after the Dean of Lincoln wanted to differentiate it from an extra "Leighton" which existed inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be tenanted to an assortment of tenants through the years, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who helped Charles I in the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement carried on expanding throughout the following decades and the construction of a railway and a canal in the Nineteenth Century saw the town grow and develop. Today's Leighton Buzzard is a prospering market town that's witnessed accelerated development in the past few decades.
