Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Facts:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Found in the county of Bedfordshire, the tranquil town of Leighton Buzzard is near the boundary in between Bedfordshire and Buckinghamshire, on the Grand Union Canal, it has a resident population of about 37,000 and a story going back to the times of the Romans, at which time the early A5 (then known as Watling St) passed the town. Nowadays Leighton Buzzard is pretty much connected to the neighbouring town of Linslade and it's about midway between Milton Keynes and Luton, it stands close to the Chiltern Hills and has a substantial quarrying industry (sand).

The History of Leighton Buzzard: It is felt that there had been settlements in and near to what's now called Leighton Buzzard way back in unrecorded times, age-old artifacts and coinage found in the area show evidence of this fact. The age-old Watling Street (built by the Romans), now termed the A5, ran through the nearby settlements of Dunstable and Hockliffe approximately 2,000 in years past, and the Romans will have at least been aware of the village during those times.

The Romans were ultimately followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who used the market place sometime in the 10th Century, and artifacts stumbled on mean that they were dwelling in the vicinity more than likely since the 6th Century. The commune as it was isn't listed until 906 after the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) specified Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, over the years, covered a way wider area compared to the town by itself, and incorporated the settlements of Eggington, Heath & Reach, Billington and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the name could very well have come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" piece did not get applied until the 12th Century when the Dean of Lincoln wanted to differentiate it from the other "Leighton" that was within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were leased to various tenants over the centuries, for example the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who endorsed Charles I during the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement grew even bigger throughout the ensuing generations and the arrival of a railway and a canal in the 19th Century saw the town grow and develop. Modern day Leighton Buzzard is a bustling market town that's witnessed improved development in the past few decades.
