Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Information:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), East of England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Found in the county of Beds, the town of Leighton Buzzard stands near the county boundary in between Bucks and Beds, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a populace close to thirty seven thousand and a historic past going back to the Roman era, when the early Watling St (now the A-5) passed by the town. Today Leighton Buzzard is attached to the adjoining town of Linslade it is about midway between Luton (Bedfordshire) and Milton Keynes (Bucks), it is found close to the Chilterns (Chiltern Hills) and boasts a substantial quarrying industry (sand).

Leighton Buzzard Through the Ages: It is considered that there existed settlements in and close to what is now known as Leighton Buzzard stretching back to unrecorded times, early relics and coins unearthed in the area offer proof of this. The early Watling Street (established by the Romans), now named the A5, passed through close by Hockliffe and Dunstable around about 2,000 in years past, and the Romans should have at the very least been aware of the Leighton Buzzard settlement at this time.

The Anglo-Saxons followed the Romans, and it was they who used the market place during the tenth century, and artefacts stumbled on show that they were inhabiting the local area almost certainly from the 6th Century. The commune existing then is not remarked upon till 906 after the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book recognised Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, traditionally, covered a far wider area than simply the town itself, and included the hamlets of Heath & Reach, Stanbridge, Billington and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the name seems to originated from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" portion wouldn't be appended till the 12th Century when the Dean of Lincoln needed to distinguish it from an extra "Leighton" which was within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were tenanted to various tenants over the centuries, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who assisted Charles I during the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement continued to grow during the succeeding generations and the development of a railway line and a canal during the 19th Century saw it expand and develop. Current day Leighton Buzzard is a flourishing market town that has witnessed increased development in the past few decades.
