Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Facts:

Location: Bedfordshire, England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Based in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the charming town of Leighton Buzzard lays near to the border in between Bedfordshire and Buckinghamshire, beside the Grand Union Canal, the town has a population of around 37,000 and a historical past harping back to the days of the Romans, at which time the ancient A5 (then known as Watling St) passed by the town. At present Leighton Buzzard is connected to the adjacent town of Linslade and is about midway between Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire) and Luton (Beds), it can be found close to the Chilterns and boasts an important sand quarrying industry.

The Story of Leighton Buzzard: It is thought that there were settlements in and close to what's now known as Leighton Buzzard going back to prehistoric times, historic relics and coinage unearthed in close proximity give proof of this. The olden Watling Street (crafted by the Romans), now identified as the A5, passed through neighbouring Dunstable and Hockliffe approximately 2,000 years back, and the Romans should have at least known of Leighton Buzzard at this time.

The Romans were followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who set up the market place sometime in the 10th Century, and artifacts unearthed show that they were inhabiting the area perhaps from the 6th Century. The commune as such wasn't discussed till 906 after the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book specified Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, in the past, incorporated a way larger area compared to the town alone, and integrated the hamlets of Stanbridge, Eggington, Heath & Reach and Billington. The "Leighton" in the name of the town appears to come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" part wasn't included till the 12th Century when the Dean of Lincoln wanted to distinguish it from the other "Leighton" that was within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were let to a great many tenants through the years, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who helped Charles I during the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town continued to grow over the following generations and the development of a railway service and a canal during the 19th Century saw it develop and expand. Current day Leighton Buzzard is a blooming market town that has witnessed improved development in recent years.
