Facts for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire, England, UK.

Based in the county of Beds in the East of England, the market town of Leighton Buzzard lies close to the county border between Bedfordshire and Buckinghamshire, on the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a resident population of approximately thirty seven thousand and a historic past going back to the Roman period, when the Roman built A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed by the town. Nowadays Leighton Buzzard is more or less connected to the nearby town of Linslade and it is roughly midway between Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire) and Luton, it is found close to the Chiltern Hills (Chilterns) and has a significant quarrying industry (sand).

The History of Leighton Buzzard: It's thought that there had been settlements in and near to what is now called Leighton Buzzard way back in prehistoric times, early artifacts and coins picked up nearby give evidence of this fact. The historic Watling Street (engineered by the Romans), now named the A5, came through the close by settlements of Hockliffe and Dunstable some 2,000 years back, and the Romans will have at least known of Leighton Buzzard at that time.

The Romans were in turn followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who created a market during the 10th Century, and artifacts discovered show that they were residing in the area probably from the sixth century. The settlement as it was then was not listed until 906 when the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) identified Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, historically, incorporated a considerably greater area than only the town itself, and included the hamlets of Stanbridge, Billington, Eggington and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the name is thought to come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" part wouldn't be inserted until the twelfth century after the Dean of Lincoln needed to differentiate it from a different "Leighton" which was within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be tenanted to a variety of tenants over the years, for example the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who assisted Charles I through the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement continued to grow throughout the succeeding years and the coming of a railway service and a canal during the Nineteenth Century saw the town develop and grow. Modern day Leighton Buzzard can be termed a busy market town that has witnessed greater development in the past few years.
