Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Information:

Location: Bedfordshire, England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Based in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the delightful town of Leighton Buzzard stands close to the boundary betwixt Beds and Buckinghamshire, beside the Grand Union Canal, the town has a resident population of around 37,000 and a story going back to the times of the Romans, at which time the early A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed by the town. Nowadays Leighton Buzzard is attached to the adjacent town of Linslade it is about mid-way between Luton and Milton Keynes, it is placed close to the Chiltern Hills (Chilterns) and has an important quarrying industry (sand).

The History of Leighton Buzzard: It is considered that there existed settlements in and close to what's now named Leighton Buzzard long ago in unrecorded times, historical artifacts and coins discovered in close proximity offer evidence of this. The olden Watling Street (established by the Romans), now known as the A5, cut through the nearby towns of Dunstable and Hockliffe some two thousand in years past, and the Romans will have at the very least been aware of the Leighton Buzzard settlement at that time.

The Romans were in turn followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was them who set up the market place sometime in the tenth century, and relics found suggest that they were settling the local area most probably from the sixth century. The commune as it was then wasn't remarked upon until 906 at which time the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) reported Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, in the past, embodied a considerably larger area than just the town itself, and covered the settlements of Billington, Stanbridge, Heath & Reach and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the name is thought to come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" section was not to be applied until the twelfth century after the Dean of Lincoln needed to distinguish it from a different "Leighton" that was within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were leased to a variety of tenants over the years, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who supported Charles I through the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement carried on expanding throughout the succeeding generations and the coming of a canal and a railway during the 19th Century saw it develop and develop. Current day Leighton Buzzard is a busy market town which has witnessed improved development in the past few decades.
