Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Information:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), East of England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Located in the county of Bedfordshire, the quiet town of Leighton Buzzard is near to the county boundary in between Bucks and Beds, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, it has a resident population close to thirty seven thousand and a historic past stretching back to Roman times, at which time the ancient Watling St (now the A-5) passed by the town. These days Leighton Buzzard is pretty much connected to the neighbouring town of Linslade and is about mid-way between Milton Keynes (Bucks) and Luton (Beds), it is located near to the Chilterns and boasts a vital sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard History: It is considered that there had been settlements in or around what is now called Leighton Buzzard stretching back to unrecorded times, historical relics and coins picked up in the area offer evidence of this. The age-old Watling Street (made by the Romans), now named the A5, passed through the neighbouring areas of Hockliffe and Dunstable some 2,000 years ago, and the Romans would have at least been aware of Leighton Buzzard at that time.

The Romans were followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was them who created a market sometime in the tenth century, and artifacts stumbled on show that they were settling the vicinity perhaps since the sixth century. The settlement as such is not cited until 906 when the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) named Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, in times past, incorporated a substantially bigger area than simply the town itself, and integrated the hamlets of Heath & Reach, Stanbridge, Billington and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the name of the town seems to come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" part wasn't appended before the 12th Century when the Dean of Lincoln was required to distinguish it from a second "Leighton" that existed inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be leased to many different tenants through the generations, for example the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who endorsed Charles I during the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement continued to grow through the following generations and the coming of a railway service and a canal in the 19th Century saw it develop and grow. Modern Leighton Buzzard is a prosperous market town that's witnessed greater development in the last few years.
