Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Information for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire, East of England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Based in the county of Beds in the East of England, the smallish town of Leighton Buzzard stands close to the county boundary betwixt Bucks and Beds, beside the Grand Union Canal, the town has a resident population close to 37,000 and a story harping back to Roman days, when the ancient A5 (then known as Watling St) passed the town. Nowadays Leighton Buzzard is attached to the adjacent town of Linslade and it's approximately mid-way between Luton (Beds) and Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire), it lies next to the Chilterns and boasts a substantial sand quarrying industry.

The History of Leighton Buzzard: It is believed that there existed settlements in or around what's now called Leighton Buzzard going back to unrecorded times, ancient artifacts and coinage uncovered nearby offer evidence of this fact. The early Watling Street (erected by the Romans), now identified as the A5, passed through the close by areas of Dunstable and Hockliffe about 2,000 in years past, and the Romans will have at least known of Leighton Buzzard at that time.

The Anglo-Saxons followed the Romans, and it was them who used the market place during the 10th Century, and relics unearthed show that they were staying in the region more than likely from the 6th Century. The commune as it was then wasn't cited till 906 at which time the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) recognised Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, historically, covered a lot wider area than merely the town itself, and contained the settlements of Stanbridge, Eggington, Heath & Reach and Billington. The "Leighton" in the name of the town is thought to come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" portion was not appended up until the twelfth century when the Dean of Lincoln wanted to differentiate it from the other "Leighton" which existed within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be tenanted to a variety of tenants through the ages, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who assisted Charles I through the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard carried on expanding through the following years and the coming of a canal and a railway service during the 19th Century saw it expand and develop.
