Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Information for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), East of England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Situated in the county of Beds, the smallish town of Leighton Buzzard lays right on the border betwixt Bedfordshire and Bucks, beside the Grand Union Canal, it has a population of about thirty seven thousand and a heritage going back to the days of the Romans, at which time the Roman built Watling St (now the A-5) passed the town. At present Leighton Buzzard is attached to the nearby town of Linslade and is roughly halfway between Luton (Beds) and Milton Keynes (Bucks), it can be found near the Chiltern Hills and has a significant quarrying industry (sand).

Leighton Buzzard History: It's believed that there had been settlements in or around what's now named Leighton Buzzard way back in unrecorded times, historical relics and coinage stumbled upon in close proximity show proof of this fact. The early Watling Street (put up by the Romans), now named the A5, ran through nearby Hockliffe and Dunstable some two thousand in years past, and the Romans will have at the very least been aware of the village at that time.

The Romans were followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who developed a market during the 10th Century, and antiquities unearthed show that they were settling the local area probably from the 6th Century. The village existing at this time wasn't listed until 906 after the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) mentioned Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, in times past, embodied a lot greater area than simply the town alone, and incorporated the settlements of Heath & Reach, Billington, Stanbridge and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the town's name appears to originated from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" component was not put in until the twelfth century after the Dean of Lincoln needed to distinguish it from another "Leighton" which was inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were tenanted to a great many tenants through the eras, for example the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who followed Charles I through the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard continued to grow through the coming generations and the establishing of of a canal and a railway service during the 19th Century saw it develop and evolve.
