Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Information for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), East of England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Found in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the delightful town of Leighton Buzzard sits right on the county boundary between Bedfordshire and Buckinghamshire, beside the Grand Union Canal, it has a resident population of around 37,000 and a historic past extending back to the era of the Romans, at which time the Roman built A5 (then known as Watling St) passed by the town. These days Leighton Buzzard is more or less joined to the adjoining town of Linslade and it is roughly midway between Luton and Milton Keynes, it lays near the Chiltern Hills (Chilterns) and has a substantial quarrying industry (sand).

Leighton Buzzard Through the Ages: It's considered that there were settlements in or around what's now known as Leighton Buzzard way back in unrecorded times, historic artifacts and coins picked up in the area offer evidence of this. The historic Watling Street (set up by the Romans), now referred to as the A5, cut through the nearby areas of Hockliffe and Dunstable about two thousand in years past, and the Romans will have at the very least been aware of the Leighton Buzzard settlement at this time.

The Romans were followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who were using a market in about the 10th Century, and artifacts picked up indicate that they were inhabiting the neighbourhood probably since the 6th Century. The commune existing then is not cited till 906 at which time the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book reported Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, in the past, covered a considerably greater area than only the town alone, and consisted of the settlements of Eggington, Standbridge, Billington and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the name appears to been taken from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" piece did not get appended until the 12th Century after the Dean of Lincoln found it necessary to distinguish it from the other "Leighton" that was within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were let to numerous tenants through the eras, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who assisted Charles I throughout the English Civil War (1642-1645).
