Positioned within the county of Beds, the charming town of Leighton Buzzard lays very close to the border betwixt Beds and Bucks, beside the Grand Union Canal, it has a population of around 37,000 and a story harping back to the times of the Romans, at which time the historical Watling Street (now the A-5) passed by the town. The Story of Leighton Buzzard: It is thought that there existed settlements in or around what's now named Leighton Buzzard going back to unrecorded times, historical artefacts and coinage uncovered nearby offer proof of this fact. The olden Watling Street (put up by the Romans), now called the A5, passed through the neighbouring areas of Dunstable and Hockliffe about 2,000 years back, and the Romans would have at least been aware of Leighton Buzzard at that time.

The Anglo-Saxons followed after the Romans, and it was they who used a market during the tenth century, and relics picked up reveal that they were residing in the local area possibly since the 6th Century. The commune existing then wasn't reported until 906 when the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 outlined Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, over the years, incorporated a far greater area than just the town by itself, and integrated the hamlets of Heath & Reach, Stanbridge, Billington and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the name appears to been taken from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" part did not get included until the twelfth century at which time the Dean of Lincoln was required to differentiate it from an extra "Leighton" which was inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were tenanted to an assortment of tenants through the centuries, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who helped Charles I in the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town grew even bigger during the following decades and the appearance of a canal and a railway line during the 19th Century saw it expand and develop. Contemporary Leighton Buzzard is a prosperous market town that's witnessed increased development in the recent past.
