Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Information for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), East of England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Set in the county of Bedfordshire, the charming town of Leighton Buzzard lays near the boundary betwixt Beds and Bucks, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, it has a population close to 37,000 and a history going back to Roman days, when the historical A5 (then known as Watling St) passed the town. These days Leighton Buzzard is attached to the adjoining town of Linslade and it's approximately midway between Luton and Milton Keynes, it stands near to the Chiltern Hills and has an important sand quarrying industry.

The History of Leighton Buzzard: It's believed that there existed settlements in and near to what is now named Leighton Buzzard harping back to prehistoric times, old artifacts and coins stumbled on nearby show evidence of this fact. The historical Watling Street (put up by the Romans), now called the A5, passed through the neighbouring areas of Hockliffe and Dunstable approximately two thousand years back, and the Romans should have at least known of Leighton Buzzard during those times.

The Anglo-Saxons came after the Romans, and it was them who set up a market during the 10th Century, and relics found denote that they were living in the neighbourhood quite possibly from the sixth century. The settlement existing at this time wasn't described until 906 at which time the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book outlined Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, historically, covered a substantially greater area than only the town itself, and incorporated the settlements of Heath & Reach, Eggington, Billington and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the name seems to been taken from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" element was not to be put on till the twelfth century at which time the Dean of Lincoln had to distinguish it from yet another "Leighton" which was within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were tenanted to numerous tenants over the centuries, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who helped Charles I through the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard continued to grow during the following generations and the establishing of of a canal and a railway line during the 19th Century saw the town develop and expand. Current day Leighton Buzzard can be described as a prospering market town that has seen increased development in the past several years.
