Factfile for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire, England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Located in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the smallish town of Leighton Buzzard stands near to the boundary between Bedfordshire and Bucks, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, the town has a population close to thirty seven thousand and a story extending back to the days of the Romans, at which time the early A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed by the town. Nowadays Leighton Buzzard is attached to the adjoining town of Linslade and is approximately midway between Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire) and Luton, it lays near to the Chilterns and boasts an important sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard Through the Ages: It is believed that there existed settlements in or around what's now named Leighton Buzzard stretching back to unrecorded times, historic artefacts and coinage picked up nearby give proof of this fact. The historical Watling Street (built by the Romans), now called the A5, passed through the nearby areas of Hockliffe and Dunstable around about 2,000 years back, and the Romans would have at the very least known of the Leighton Buzzard settlement at that time.

The Romans were later followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was them who developed a market sometime in the 10th Century, and relics found suggest that they were inhabiting the neighbourhood most likely since the 6th Century. The settlement as it was wasn't described till 906 at which time the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) listed Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, historically, covered a significantly greater area than simply the town itself, and incorporated the settlements of Heath & Reach, Billington, Stanbridge and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the name is thought to come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" section was not appended till the 12th Century when the Dean of Lincoln needed to distinguish it from the other "Leighton" that was inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were leased to various tenants over the generations, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who supported Charles I through the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement continued to grow throughout the following years and the appearance of a canal and a railway service in the 19th Century saw the town grow and develop. Present day Leighton Buzzard can be described as a booming market town which has witnessed accelerated development in the last few years.
