Set in the county of Bedfordshire, the tranquil town of Leighton Buzzard lies right on the county boundary between Beds and Buckinghamshire, beside the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a resident population of approximately 37,000 and a history going back to the Roman era, when the early A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed by the town. Leighton Buzzard History: It's felt that there existed settlements in and near to what is now named Leighton Buzzard harping back to prehistoric times, early artefacts and coinage found nearby offer proof of this fact. The old Watling Street (established by the Romans), now referred to as the A5, ran through the close by towns of Hockliffe and Dunstable about 2,000 yrs ago, and the Romans should have at least been aware of the Leighton Buzzard settlement during those times.

The Anglo-Saxons followed after the Romans, and it was they who introduced the market place during the tenth century, and artefacts unearthed denote that they were inhabiting the locale almost certainly from the sixth century. The village existing then is not cited until 906 after the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book outlined Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, historically, encompassed a way wider area than merely the town by itself, and integrated the settlements of Stanbridge, Billington, Eggington and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the name is thought to been taken from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" piece was not to be appended till the twelfth century after the Dean of Lincoln had to differentiate it from an extra "Leighton" which existed within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be tenanted to several tenants over the eras, for example the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who backed Charles I through the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town grew even bigger through the coming decades and the arrival of a railway and a canal during the 19th Century saw it develop and grow. Contemporary Leighton Buzzard is a thriving market town that has seen greater development in recent times.
