Based in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the town of Leighton Buzzard sits right on the county border between Bedfordshire and Buckinghamshire, on the Grand Union Canal, the town has a population of about 37,000 and a history extending back to the days of the Romans, when the historical Watling Street (now the A-5) passed the town. These days Leighton Buzzard is connected to the adjoining town of Linslade and is approximately mid-way between Milton Keynes and Luton, it is found very close to the Chilterns and boasts an important quarrying industry (sand).

The Story of Leighton Buzzard: It's believed that there existed settlements in and near to what's now named Leighton Buzzard way back in unrecorded times, old artifacts and coinage unearthed nearby show evidence of this. The old Watling Street (established by the Romans), now termed the A5, passed through the nearby areas of Dunstable and Hockliffe roughly 2,000 years back, and the Romans will have at least known of Leighton Buzzard as they passed it.

The Romans were ultimately followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was they who were using the market place in around the tenth century, and artefacts uncovered reveal that they were inhabiting the local area almost certainly from the 6th Century. The commune existing at that time isn't discussed until 906 after the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) outlined Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, historically, incorporated a significantly bigger area compared to the town alone, and consisted of the hamlets of Eggington, Heath & Reach, Billington and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the name is thought to derived from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" part was not appended till the twelfth century at which time the Dean of Lincoln was required to distinguish it from yet another "Leighton" which he had within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were tenanted to many different tenants through the generations, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who backed Charles I in the Civil War (1642-1645).
