The historic Watling Street (put up by the Romans), now identified as the A5, went through the close by towns of Dunstable and Hockliffe about two thousand years back, and the Romans should have at least known of the village at this time.

The commune as it was then was not referred to till 906 when the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book recognized Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, in times past, embraced a considerably larger area than merely the town itself, and covered the hamlets of Eggington, Standbridge, Billington and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the town's name appears to come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" part did not get applied up until the twelfth century at which time the Dean of Lincoln wanted to differentiate it from yet another "Leighton" which he had within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be let to a great many tenants through the generations, for example the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who supported Charles I in the Civil War (1642-1645).
