Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Facts:

Location: Bedfordshire, East of England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Located in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the busy town of Leighton Buzzard lays near the county border betwixt Bedfordshire and Buckinghamshire, beside the Grand Union Canal, the town has a resident population close to thirty seven thousand and a heritage stretching back to the days of the Romans, when the early A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed the town. Nowadays Leighton Buzzard is connected to the adjoining town of Linslade and it's approximately mid-way between Luton (Bedfordshire) and Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire), it can be found close to the Chiltern Hills (Chilterns) and has a vital quarrying industry (sand).

Leighton Buzzard History: It's thought that there had been settlements in and close to what's now called Leighton Buzzard way back in prehistoric times, old relics and coinage unearthed in close proximity offer proof of this. The historical Watling Street (put up by the Romans), now known as the A5, passed through the nearby settlements of Dunstable and Hockliffe roughly two thousand years back, and the Romans would have at the very least been aware of the Leighton Buzzard settlement as they passed it.

The Romans were later followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was them who were using the market place during the tenth century, and artefacts discovered show that they were settling the local area almost certainly since the sixth century. The settlement as such is not mentioned until 906 at which time the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book named Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, historically, comprised a far bigger area than only the town by itself, and integrated the settlements of Stanbridge, Eggington, Heath & Reach and Billington. The "Leighton" in the name might possibly have come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" section was not put on till the 12th Century after the Dean of Lincoln was required to differentiate it from another "Leighton" that was within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were tenanted to a number of tenants over the ages, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who assisted Charles I during the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town grew even bigger during the coming years and the arrival of a railway line and a canal in the 19th Century saw it develop and evolve. Present day Leighton Buzzard is a thriving market town that's witnessed greater development in the past few years.
