Information for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Located in the county of Beds in the East of England, the market town of Leighton Buzzard sits very close to the county boundary between Bedfordshire and Bucks, beside the Grand Union Canal, the town has a population of approximately 37,000 and a historical past going back to the times of the Romans, at which time the Roman built A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed by the town. These days Leighton Buzzard is linked to the adjacent town of Linslade and is roughly halfway between Milton Keynes (Bucks) and Luton (Bedfordshire), it is situated next to the Chiltern Hills and boasts a significant quarrying industry (sand).

The Story of Leighton Buzzard: It is thought that there were settlements in or around what's now known as Leighton Buzzard stretching back to prehistoric times, old artefacts and coins discovered in the area give proof of this. The early Watling Street (erected by the Romans), now named the A5, passed through the neighbouring towns of Hockliffe and Dunstable over 2,000 in years past, and the Romans would have at least known of the Leighton Buzzard settlement at that time.

The Romans were later followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who used the market place during the tenth century, and antiquities stumbled upon reveal that they were inhabiting the local area almost certainly since the 6th Century. The village existing then is not described till 906 at which time the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 mentioned Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, over the years, comprised a way wider area than merely the town by itself, and included the hamlets of Billington, Stanbridge, Heath & Reach and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the name of the town may well have come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" portion did not get inserted till the 12th Century when the Dean of Lincoln was required to differentiate it from a different "Leighton" that was within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be let to a great many tenants through the ages, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who endorsed Charles I during the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town continued to grow during the coming generations and the establishing of of a railway and a canal in the 19th Century saw it develop and grow. Twenty-first century Leighton Buzzard can be referred to as a prospering market town that's witnessed greater development in the last few years.
