Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Facts for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire, East of England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Located in the county of Bedfordshire, the busy town of Leighton Buzzard is right on the border betwixt Beds and Bucks, on the Grand Union Canal, the town has a resident population of about 37,000 and a heritage harping back to the times of the Romans, when the historic Watling St (now the A-5) passed by the town. Today Leighton Buzzard is coupled with the neighbouring town of Linslade and it is roughly mid-way between Luton (Bedfordshire) and Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire), it is located close to the Chiltern Hills and boasts a vital quarrying industry (sand).

The History of Leighton Buzzard: It's thought that there had been settlements in and close to what's now called Leighton Buzzard long ago in unrecorded times, age-old artifacts and coins uncovered in the area show proof of this. The early Watling Street (crafted by the Romans), now referred to as the A5, passed through the neighbouring areas of Hockliffe and Dunstable around two thousand years ago, and the Romans would have at least known of Leighton Buzzard as they passed it.

The Romans were thereafter followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was they who set up a market in about the tenth century, and artefacts picked up show that they were settling the area most probably since the sixth century. The commune as it was is not documented till 906 after the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 talked about Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, over time, embodied a way greater area compared to the town itself, and contained the hamlets of Stanbridge, Heath & Reach, Eggington and BIllington. The "Leighton" in the town's name seems to been taken from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" element did not get added until the twelfth century after the Dean of Lincoln needed to differentiate it from another "Leighton" that existed inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be let to a variety of tenants over the generations, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who assisted Charles I throughout the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement continued to grow over the succeeding generations and the appearance of a railway line and a canal in the Nineteenth Century saw it grow and develop. Twenty-first century Leighton Buzzard is a growing market town that's witnessed increased development in the past several years.
