Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Information:

Location: Bedfordshire, East of England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Based in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the smallish town of Leighton Buzzard stands very near to the border betwixt Bedfordshire and Bucks, on the Grand Union Canal, the town has a population close to thirty seven thousand and a heritage going back to the days of the Romans, at which time the ancient Watling Street (now the A-5) passed by the town. Today Leighton Buzzard is pretty much joined to the adjacent town of Linslade and is about mid-way between Luton (Beds) and Milton Keynes (Bucks), it lies near to the Chiltern Hills and boasts an important sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard Through the Ages: It is thought that there had been settlements in and near to what's now called Leighton Buzzard way back in prehistoric times, age-old relics and coins uncovered in close proximity give evidence of this fact. The olden Watling Street (put up by the Romans), now called the A5, came through the close by areas of Hockliffe and Dunstable about two thousand yrs ago, and the Romans would have at least been aware of the village at that time.

The Anglo-Saxons followed after the Romans, and it was them who were using a market in around the 10th Century, and artefacts found suggest that they were settling the locale in all probability since the sixth century. The commune existing at this time was not reported till 906 after the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) mentioned Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, over the years, embraced a much greater area compared to the town itself, and included the settlements of Billington, Stanbridge, Heath & Reach and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the name is thought to derived from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" section wasn't included before the twelfth century after the Dean of Lincoln had to differentiate it from yet another "Leighton" that he had within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be leased to a number of tenants over the centuries, for example the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who supported Charles I through the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard carried on growing through the succeeding generations and the construction of a railway line and a canal in the 19th Century saw it develop and grow. Modern day Leighton Buzzard is a prosperous market town that's witnessed accelerated development in the past several years.
