Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Facts for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire, East of England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Located in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the delightful town of Leighton Buzzard sits near the border between Buckinghamshire and Bedfordshire, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a resident population of around thirty seven thousand and a past extending back to Roman days, at which time the historic A5 (then known as Watling St) passed by the town. At present Leighton Buzzard is attached to the neighbouring town of Linslade and it's approximately halfway between Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire) and Luton, it stands near the Chilterns (Chiltern Hills) and has a vital sand quarrying industry.

The Story of Leighton Buzzard: It is believed that there existed settlements in or around what's now known as Leighton Buzzard harping back to unrecorded times, old artifacts and coinage stumbled upon near by show evidence of this fact. The longstanding Watling Street (set up by the Romans), now named the A5, passed through neighbouring Hockliffe and Dunstable about two thousand years back, and the Romans would have at least known of Leighton Buzzard as they passed it.

The Anglo-Saxons followed after the Romans, and it was they who introduced a market during the 10th Century, and relics discovered suggest that they were living in the neighbourhood in all likelihood from the 6th Century. The village as it was was not listed until 906 when the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book specified Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, over the years, incorporated a much wider area than only the town itself, and integrated the hamlets of Stanbridge, Heath & Reach, Eggington and BIllington. The "Leighton" in the town's name is thought to come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" element was not to be added on until the 12th Century after the Dean of Lincoln found it necessary to differentiate it from a different "Leighton" that was inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were leased to various tenants over the centuries, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who helped Charles I in the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement grew even larger during the ensuing generations and the development of a railway service and a canal in the Nineteenth Century saw it grow and develop. Modern day Leighton Buzzard is a busy market town that has witnessed accelerated development in recent times.
