Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Information:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Based in the county of Bedfordshire, the delightful town of Leighton Buzzard is close to the county border between Bedfordshire and Buckinghamshire, on the Grand Union Canal, the town has a population close to 37,000 and a heritage stretching back to the era of the Romans, at which time the early Watling Street (now the A-5) passed the town. Today Leighton Buzzard is connected to the adjacent town of Linslade it is about mid-way between Luton and Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire), it is located close to the Chilterns (Chiltern Hills) and has an important quarrying industry (sand).

Leighton Buzzard Historic Past: It's felt that there had been settlements in and near to what's now called Leighton Buzzard harping back to prehistoric times, early artefacts and coins picked up nearby give evidence of this fact. The historic Watling Street (constructed by the Romans), now named the A5, came through the nearby areas of Dunstable and Hockliffe around about 2,000 years ago, and the Romans will have at least known of the village at that time.

The Romans were in turn followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was Saxons who used the market place in around the tenth century, and artefacts stumbled on suggest that they were settling the region quite possibly from the sixth century. The commune as such was not cited until 906 when the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) documented Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, typically, encompassed a significantly bigger area than simply the town alone, and consisted of the hamlets of Stanbridge, Heath & Reach, Eggington and BIllington. The "Leighton" in the town's name seems to originated from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" part was not applied up until the 12th Century after the Dean of Lincoln had to distinguish it from yet another "Leighton" which was within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be leased to numerous tenants over the years, for example the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who supported Charles I in the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town continued to grow through the ensuing generations and the appearance of a canal and a railway line in the Nineteenth Century saw the town develop and expand. Today's Leighton Buzzard is a booming market town that has witnessed increased development in recent times.
