Situated in the county of Bedfordshire, the delightful town of Leighton Buzzard lies near the border in between Beds and Bucks, on the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a populace of about thirty seven thousand and a history going back to the Roman period, at which time the Roman built Watling St (now the A-5) passed the town. Today Leighton Buzzard is attached to the adjacent town of Linslade and it is approximately halfway between Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire) and Luton, it is situated near to the Chilterns (Chiltern Hills) and boasts a significant sand quarrying industry.

The Story of Leighton Buzzard: It's believed that there were settlements in or around what is now called Leighton Buzzard harping back to unrecorded times, historic artifacts and coins found near by give evidence of this. The early Watling Street (put up by the Romans), now called the A5, passed through the neighbouring areas of Hockliffe and Dunstable around about 2,000 years back, and the Romans will have at least been aware of the Leighton Buzzard settlement during those times.

The Anglo-Saxons followed the Romans, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who set up a market sometime in the 10th Century, and relics unearthed suggest that they were inhabiting the neighbourhood quite likely since the sixth century. The village as such is not discussed till 906 when the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book talked about Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, in times past, embraced a substantially larger area than simply the town alone, and consisted of the hamlets of Heath & Reach, Billington, Stanbridge and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the name appears to come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" component did not get added before the twelfth century at which time the Dean of Lincoln wanted to distinguish it from a second "Leighton" that he had within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were let to several tenants through the ages, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who backed Charles I in the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement grew even larger through the following years and the coming of a canal and a railway line in the Nineteenth Century saw the town develop and evolve. Twenty-first century Leighton Buzzard can be referred to as a successful market town that's seen improved development in recent times.
