Leighton Buzzard Through the Ages: It is felt that there had been settlements in or around what is now known as Leighton Buzzard long ago in prehistoric times, age-old artefacts and coins uncovered nearby give evidence of this fact. The historic Watling Street (built by the Romans), now referred to as the A5, came through close by Dunstable and Hockliffe around about two thousand yrs ago, and the Romans should have at the very least been aware of the village at that time.

The Anglo-Saxons came after the Romans, and it was Saxons who were using the market place during the 10th Century, and artefacts stumbled upon suggest that they were dwelling in the region almost certainly since the 6th Century. The commune as it was then wasn't cited until 906 when the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book identified Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, historically, embodied a way greater area than only the town alone, and comprised the settlements of Eggington, Billington, Stanbridge and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the town's name is thought to originated from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" element wouldn't be added till the 12th Century when the Dean of Lincoln needed to distinguish it from a second "Leighton" that he had inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were let to various tenants through the years, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who followed Charles I in the English Civil War (1642-1645).
