Situated in the county of Beds in the East of England, the delightful town of Leighton Buzzard stands right on the border in between Bucks and Beds, on the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a resident population close to thirty seven thousand and a heritage extending back to the era of the Romans, when the historical A5 (then known as Watling St) passed by the town. Today Leighton Buzzard is linked to the neighbouring town of Linslade and it is approximately halfway between Milton Keynes and Luton, it is located close to the Chilterns and has an important sand quarrying industry.

The History of Leighton Buzzard: It is felt that there had been settlements in or around what is now known as Leighton Buzzard long ago in prehistoric times, early artifacts and coinage unearthed in the area show evidence of this fact. The longstanding Watling Street (engineered by the Romans), now termed the A5, passed through the neighbouring areas of Dunstable and Hockliffe around about two thousand yrs ago, and the Romans would have at least been aware of the Leighton Buzzard settlement during those times.

The Anglo-Saxons followed the Romans, and it was them who developed a market sometime in the tenth century, and artifacts uncovered suggest that they were residing in the area almost certainly since the 6th Century. The village existing at this time wasn't mentioned until 906 at which time the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 reported Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, over the years, embraced a way bigger area than just the town alone, and covered the settlements of Stanbridge, Heath & Reach, Eggington and BIllington. The "Leighton" in the name of the town may possibly have come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" part did not get added until the 12th Century after the Dean of Lincoln had to distinguish it from a different "Leighton" which he had within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be tenanted to an assortment of tenants over the ages, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who backed Charles I in the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement grew even bigger through the coming decades and the establishing of of a canal and a railway line in the Nineteenth Century saw the town develop and evolve. Modern Leighton Buzzard can be referred to as a prosperous market town which has seen improved development in recent times.
