Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Factfile:

Location: Bedfordshire, East of England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Positioned within the county of Beds in the East of England, the delightful town of Leighton Buzzard sits right on the county boundary betwixt Bedfordshire and Buckinghamshire, beside the Grand Union Canal, it has a resident population of about 37,000 and a past going back to the Roman period, at which time the historical Watling St (now the A-5) passed the town. Today Leighton Buzzard is connected to the nearby town of Linslade and is approximately mid-way between Luton and Milton Keynes (Bucks), it is located next to the Chiltern Hills (Chilterns) and boasts an important quarrying industry (sand).

Leighton Buzzard Historic Past: It is felt that there had been settlements in and near to what is now known as Leighton Buzzard way back in unrecorded times, historic artifacts and coinage found nearby give proof of this. The historical Watling Street (built by the Romans), now named the A5, passed through neighbouring Hockliffe and Dunstable about two thousand yrs ago, and the Romans should have at the very least known of the Leighton Buzzard settlement at that time.

The Romans were followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was they who were using a market in about the 10th Century, and relics stumbled upon indicate that they were inhabiting the neighbourhood in all likelihood from the 6th Century. The commune as it was then isn't referred to till 906 when the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) documented Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, over the years, covered a far bigger area than merely the town alone, and included the settlements of Billington, Eggington, Heath & Reach and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the name is thought to derived from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" section wasn't added prior to the 12th Century when the Dean of Lincoln had to distinguish it from the other "Leighton" that he had inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were let to a variety of tenants over the years, for example the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who endorsed Charles I in the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement continued to grow over the ensuing decades and the building of a canal and a railway line in the Nineteenth Century saw the town grow and develop. Current day Leighton Buzzard can be termed a booming market town that has witnessed greater development in the last few years.
