Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Facts for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), East of England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Found in the county of Beds in the East of England, the smallish town of Leighton Buzzard lies very close to the border betwixt Beds and Buckinghamshire, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, the town has a resident population of around thirty seven thousand and a history going back to Roman times, when the early Watling Street (now the A-5) passed the town. At present Leighton Buzzard is pretty much connected to the nearby town of Linslade and it is about mid-way between Milton Keynes (Bucks) and Luton (Bedfordshire), it is situated close to the Chiltern Hills and boasts a substantial quarrying industry (sand).

The Story of Leighton Buzzard: It's thought that there existed settlements in and near to what's now named Leighton Buzzard way back in unrecorded times, age-old artefacts and coinage picked up near by show evidence of this fact. The longstanding Watling Street (fashioned by the Romans), now named the A5, passed through the neighbouring towns of Dunstable and Hockliffe about 2,000 years ago, and the Romans would have at least been aware of Leighton Buzzard at this time.

The Anglo-Saxons came after the Romans, and it was them who were using the market place during the 10th Century, and relics stumbled upon show that they were staying in the vicinity more than likely since the sixth century. The village existing then isn't cited until 906 after the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book outlined Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, historically, encompassed a significantly wider area than only the town by itself, and integrated the settlements of Heath & Reach, Billington, Stanbridge and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the name of the town is thought to come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" section wasn't put on prior to the 12th Century when the Dean of Lincoln wanted to distinguish it from another "Leighton" that he had inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be let to a great many tenants through the centuries, for example the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who assisted Charles I during the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement continued to grow over the ensuing generations and the coming of a railway and a canal during the 19th Century saw it develop and evolve. Twenty-first century Leighton Buzzard is a thriving market town that has seen accelerated development in the past few decades.
