Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Information:

Location: Bedfordshire, East of England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Located in the county of Bedfordshire, the bustling town of Leighton Buzzard lies close to the county border in between Beds and Bucks, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, it has a population of around 37,000 and a past going back to the Roman period, when the ancient Watling St (now the A-5) passed by the town. Presently Leighton Buzzard is connected to the nearby town of Linslade and it is roughly midway between Luton (Beds) and Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire), it is placed very close to the Chilterns (Chiltern Hills) and has an important sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard History: It is believed that there were settlements in and close to what's now named Leighton Buzzard going back to prehistoric times, early relics and coins discovered in close proximity give proof of this fact. The age-old Watling Street (made by the Romans), now known as the A5, passed through close by Dunstable and Hockliffe around two thousand years back, and the Romans should have at the very least known of Leighton Buzzard during those times.

The Romans were in turn followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who used the market place during the tenth century, and antiquities discovered suggest that they were settling the local area perhaps from the sixth century. The settlement as such is not observed until 906 when the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book documented Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, over the years, encompassed a considerably bigger area than merely the town alone, and comprised the settlements of Heath & Reach, Stanbridge, Billington and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the town's name seems to derived from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" section did not get put in until the twelfth century after the Dean of Lincoln found it necessary to differentiate it from a different "Leighton" which he had within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were leased to various tenants over the generations, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who followed Charles I throughout the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement carried on growing through the following years and the appearance of a railway line and a canal during the 19th Century saw the town develop and grow. Modern Leighton Buzzard can be described as a growing market town which has seen improved development in the past several years.
