Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Information for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire, East of England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Found in the county of Bedfordshire, the charming town of Leighton Buzzard stands very near to the boundary between Bucks and Bedfordshire, beside the Grand Union Canal, it has a populace of around 37,000 and a historical past harping back to the Roman era, at which time the ancient Watling St (now the A-5) passed by the town. Today Leighton Buzzard is pretty much joined to the neighbouring town of Linslade and is approximately mid-way between Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire) and Luton (Beds), it stands next to the Chilterns and has an important sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard Through the Ages: It is considered that there had been settlements in or around what is now called Leighton Buzzard harping back to unrecorded times, age-old artifacts and coinage picked up in close proximity give evidence of this fact. The historic Watling Street (constructed by the Romans), now named the A5, passed through close by Hockliffe and Dunstable around about two thousand years ago, and the Romans would have at least known of Leighton Buzzard at this time.

The Anglo-Saxons followed the Romans, and it was them who were using a market sometime in the 10th Century, and artifacts stumbled upon show that they were inhabiting the area in all probability since the sixth century. The settlement as it was was not observed till 906 after the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 recognized Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, over time, embodied a considerably larger area than only the town by itself, and integrated the hamlets of Billington, Heath & Reach, Stanbridge and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the name seems to originated from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" piece was not appended up until the 12th Century after the Dean of Lincoln had to differentiate it from a second "Leighton" which was within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were tenanted to a number of tenants over the centuries, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who supported Charles I in the English Civil War (1642-1645).
