Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Information:

Location: Bedfordshire, East of England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Based in the county of Beds in the East of England, the busy town of Leighton Buzzard stands right on the boundary in between Bedfordshire and Bucks, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, the town has a population close to 37,000 and a heritage harping back to Roman times, at which time the Roman built Watling Street (now the A-5) passed the town. Nowadays Leighton Buzzard is more or less joined to the neighbouring town of Linslade and it's roughly halfway between Milton Keynes (Bucks) and Luton, it lies near to the Chiltern Hills and has an important sand quarrying industry.

The History of Leighton Buzzard: It's felt that there were settlements in and near to what is now named Leighton Buzzard way back in unrecorded times, historic artefacts and coins stumbled on in close proximity give evidence of this. The age-old Watling Street (made by the Romans), now referred to as the A5, cut through the nearby towns of Dunstable and Hockliffe roughly 2,000 years back, and the Romans should have at least been aware of the village as they passed it.

The Anglo-Saxons followed after the Romans, and it was them who created the market place sometime in the tenth century, and artifacts discovered reveal that they were residing in the vicinity in all probability from the 6th Century. The commune as it was isn't discussed till 906 at which time the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book described Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, over the years, covered a much bigger area than just the town by itself, and contained the hamlets of Heath & Reach, Eggington, Billington and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the name is thought to come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" element was not inserted before the twelfth century at which time the Dean of Lincoln was required to distinguish it from another "Leighton" which was inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be tenanted to many different tenants over the years, for example the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who assisted Charles I throughout the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement grew even bigger during the coming generations and the coming of a canal and a railway service in the 19th Century saw it develop and develop. Contemporary Leighton Buzzard can be described as a booming market town that's seen increased development in the past few years.
