Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Information:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), East of England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Based in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the town of Leighton Buzzard is close to the boundary betwixt Bedfordshire and Buckinghamshire, beside the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a population of about 37,000 and a heritage stretching back to the times of the Romans, when the Roman built A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed the town. These days Leighton Buzzard is linked to the neighbouring town of Linslade and it's roughly mid-way between Luton (Beds) and Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire), it can be found near the Chiltern Hills and boasts a substantial quarrying industry (sand).

Leighton Buzzard Through the Ages: It is felt that there were settlements in and close to what is now known as Leighton Buzzard long ago in unrecorded times, early artefacts and coinage picked up in the area show proof of this fact. The age old Watling Street (put up by the Romans), now known as the A5, came through the neighbouring settlements of Dunstable and Hockliffe some two thousand yrs ago, and the Romans would have at least been aware of Leighton Buzzard as they passed it.

The Anglo-Saxons came after the Romans, and it was Saxons who set up the market place in around the tenth century, and antiquities found suggest that they were inhabiting the locale probably from the sixth century. The commune as it was then is not listed till 906 at which time the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 described Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, traditionally, encompassed a far wider area compared to the town itself, and consisted of the settlements of Eggington, Billington, Stanbridge and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the name of the town seems to originated from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" piece wouldn't be added on up until the twelfth century after the Dean of Lincoln was required to differentiate it from a different "Leighton" which existed within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were tenanted to a number of tenants over the centuries, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who endorsed Charles I in the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard continued to grow through the following generations and the arrival of a canal and a railway during the Nineteenth Century saw the town develop and expand. Modern day Leighton Buzzard can be described as a flourishing market town that's witnessed greater development in the past several years.
