Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Information:

Location: Bedfordshire, East of England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Set within the county of Bedfordshire, the smallish town of Leighton Buzzard lies very near to the border between Bedfordshire and Buckinghamshire, beside the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a resident population of about 37,000 and a story harping back to Roman days, at which time the early A5 (then known as Watling St) passed by the town. Presently Leighton Buzzard is linked to the neighbouring town of Linslade and it is approximately halfway between Milton Keynes (Bucks) and Luton (Beds), it lies near the Chiltern Hills and boasts a significant sand quarrying industry.

The Story of Leighton Buzzard: It is thought that there existed settlements in or around what is now called Leighton Buzzard harping back to unrecorded times, early artefacts and coins found nearby show proof of this. The old Watling Street (set up by the Romans), now named the A5, passed through the neighbouring towns of Hockliffe and Dunstable approximately two thousand years back, and the Romans should have at the very least been aware of the village during those times.

The Anglo-Saxons came after the Romans, and it was Saxons who were using a market in about the tenth century, and relics unearthed show that they were residing in the area possibly since the sixth century. The village existing at this time isn't observed until 906 at which time the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book specified Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, traditionally, embraced a substantially bigger area than simply the town by itself, and covered the settlements of Stanbridge, Billington, Eggington and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the name appears to come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" element was not inserted before the twelfth century at which time the Dean of Lincoln had to differentiate it from another "Leighton" that he had inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were let to many different tenants through the generations, for example the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who followed Charles I in the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town grew even bigger through the succeeding decades and the arrival of a canal and a railway service during the 19th Century saw the town grow and develop. Modern day Leighton Buzzard is a thriving market town that's seen improved development in recent times.
