Leighton Buzzard Factfile:

Location: Bedfordshire, East of England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Found in the county of Bedfordshire, the quiet town of Leighton Buzzard is near to the county border in between Beds and Bucks, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, it has a population of approximately 37,000 and a history extending back to the times of the Romans, when the early A5 (then known as Watling St) passed the town. Presently Leighton Buzzard is coupled with the adjoining town of Linslade and is roughly mid-way between Milton Keynes and Luton, it is located near the Chilterns and has a vital quarrying industry (sand).

Leighton Buzzard Through the Ages: It's believed that there had been settlements in or around what is now called Leighton Buzzard way back in prehistoric times, age-old artifacts and coins picked up in close proximity show evidence of this fact. The historical Watling Street (established by the Romans), now identified as the A5, came through the nearby areas of Dunstable and Hockliffe around 2,000 in years past, and the Romans will have at least known of the village at this time.

The Anglo-Saxons came after the Romans, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who introduced a market in about the tenth century, and artifacts uncovered suggest that they were settling the region in all probability since the sixth century. The settlement as such wasn't listed until 906 when the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book identified Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, in the past, encompassed a much bigger area compared to the town by itself, and contained the hamlets of Billington, Heath & Reach, Stanbridge and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the name is thought to come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" piece wasn't put in till the 12th Century after the Dean of Lincoln found it imperative to distinguish it from the other "Leighton" which was within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be leased to many different tenants through the generations, for example the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who supported Charles I in the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard grew even bigger over the coming decades and the appearance of a railway and a canal during the Nineteenth Century saw it develop and expand.
