Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Factfile for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Located in the county of Bedfordshire, the quiet town of Leighton Buzzard sits very near to the boundary between Buckinghamshire and Bedfordshire, beside the Grand Union Canal, it has a resident population of approximately 37,000 and a history stretching back to the times of the Romans, when the historical A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed the town. Presently Leighton Buzzard is pretty much joined to the nearby town of Linslade and it's roughly midway between Luton (Beds) and Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire), it sits very close to the Chilterns and boasts a substantial sand quarrying industry.

The History of Leighton Buzzard: It is believed that there were settlements in or around what is now known as Leighton Buzzard long ago in unrecorded times, ancient artifacts and coinage picked up in close proximity offer evidence of this. The ancient Watling Street (engineered by the Romans), now termed the A5, passed through the close by areas of Hockliffe and Dunstable some 2,000 years back, and the Romans would have at least been aware of the village as they passed it.

The Anglo-Saxons followed after the Romans, and it was they who created a market sometime in the tenth century, and relics unearthed denote that they were residing in the region most likely since the sixth century. The village as it was wasn't referred to until 906 at which time the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book outlined Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, over the years, embraced a way wider area than only the town itself, and included the settlements of Eggington, Billington, Stanbridge and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the town's name appears to come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" element was not to be appended until the twelfth century after the Dean of Lincoln wanted to distinguish it from the other "Leighton" that was within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were leased to a great many tenants over the years, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who followed Charles I during the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town carried on expanding during the succeeding decades and the appearance of a canal and a railway service during the Nineteenth Century saw the town evolve and develop. Current day Leighton Buzzard is a thriving market town which has seen greater development in recent years.
