Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Factfile:

Location: Bedfordshire, England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Located in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the smallish town of Leighton Buzzard stands close to the county boundary in between Bedfordshire and Bucks, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, the town has a resident population close to 37,000 and a historic past stretching back to Roman times, when the early A5 (then known as Watling St) passed the town. Nowadays Leighton Buzzard is attached to the nearby town of Linslade and it is roughly halfway between Luton (Bedfordshire) and Milton Keynes (Bucks), it is located next to the Chilterns and boasts an important quarrying industry (sand).

Leighton Buzzard Through the Ages: It is felt that there had been settlements in or around what is now known as Leighton Buzzard harping back to unrecorded times, historic artefacts and coins uncovered nearby show evidence of this. The historic Watling Street (put up by the Romans), now referred to as the A5, came through the neighbouring areas of Hockliffe and Dunstable about two thousand in years past, and the Romans would have at least been aware of the Leighton Buzzard settlement at that time.

The Anglo-Saxons followed the Romans, and it was they who used the market place sometime in the tenth century, and artifacts found show that they were residing in the area probably from the sixth century. The settlement as such is not reported till 906 at which time the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book mentioned Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, in the past, covered a lot greater area than only the town itself, and covered the hamlets of Stanbridge, Heath & Reach, Eggington and BIllington. The "Leighton" in the name of the town is thought to originated from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" portion did not get included till the twelfth century after the Dean of Lincoln wanted to distinguish it from another "Leighton" which existed inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be tenanted to many different tenants through the centuries, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who helped Charles I during the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard carried on expanding throughout the coming generations and the arrival of a railway service and a canal in the Nineteenth Century saw the town grow and develop.
