Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Information for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Located in the county of Bedfordshire, the smallish town of Leighton Buzzard lays near the county border between Buckinghamshire and Bedfordshire, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, it has a populace of about 37,000 and a heritage harping back to the Roman era, at which time the early Watling St (now the A-5) passed the town. Presently Leighton Buzzard is connected to the adjacent town of Linslade and it's roughly halfway between Luton (Bedfordshire) and Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire), it lays next to the Chilterns (Chiltern Hills) and boasts an important quarrying industry (sand).

The Story of Leighton Buzzard: It's felt that there had been settlements in or around what is now known as Leighton Buzzard going back to unrecorded times, ancient artifacts and coins discovered in the area show proof of this fact. The old Watling Street (engineered by the Romans), now referred to as the A5, passed through the nearby settlements of Hockliffe and Dunstable around 2,000 in years past, and the Romans should have at the very least known of the Leighton Buzzard settlement during those times.

The Romans were later followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was Saxons who developed a market during the tenth century, and artefacts uncovered suggest that they were inhabiting the area probably since the sixth century. The village as it was was not referred to till 906 after the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 recognized Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, in the past, incorporated a lot bigger area than merely the town itself, and incorporated the settlements of Heath & Reach, Eggington, Billington and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the town's name seems to derived from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" component was not to be appended before the twelfth century at which time the Dean of Lincoln needed to differentiate it from a second "Leighton" which existed within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were leased to many different tenants through the generations, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who assisted Charles I in the Civil War (1642-1645).
