Located in the county of Beds, the smallish town of Leighton Buzzard lays very near to the county boundary between Bedfordshire and Bucks, beside the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a resident population close to thirty seven thousand and a history extending back to the Roman era, at which time the early Watling St (now the A-5) passed the town. Leighton Buzzard Through the Ages: It is thought that there were settlements in and near to what's now called Leighton Buzzard way back in prehistoric times, old artefacts and coinage uncovered near by offer evidence of this. The historical Watling Street (set up by the Romans), now known as the A5, came through nearby Dunstable and Hockliffe approximately two thousand years ago, and the Romans will have at least known of the village during those times.

The Romans were ultimately followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was they who used the market place during the 10th Century, and artefacts stumbled upon denote that they were residing in the area probably since the sixth century. The settlement as it was wasn't documented till 906 when the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) identified Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, historically, embraced a much bigger area than simply the town by itself, and contained the hamlets of Billington, Heath & Reach, Stanbridge and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the name appears to come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" piece did not get inserted up until the twelfth century after the Dean of Lincoln had to distinguish it from the other "Leighton" that was within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were tenanted to several tenants over the years, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who endorsed Charles I throughout the English Civil War (1642-1645).
