Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Information for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire, East of England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Positioned in the county of Beds, the smallish town of Leighton Buzzard is right on the county boundary betwixt Bucks and Bedfordshire, on the Grand Union Canal, the town has a population of about 37,000 and a past harping back to the days of the Romans, when the ancient A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed by the town. Today Leighton Buzzard is pretty much connected to the adjoining town of Linslade and it is about midway between Milton Keynes (Bucks) and Luton, it is found very close to the Chiltern Hills (Chilterns) and has a substantial sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard Through the Ages: It is thought that there existed settlements in and close to what is now named Leighton Buzzard harping back to unrecorded times, early artefacts and coins uncovered in the area give evidence of this fact. The early Watling Street (built by the Romans), now termed the A5, passed through the nearby areas of Dunstable and Hockliffe around two thousand years back, and the Romans will have at least been aware of the village during those times.

The Romans were followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was Saxons who set up a market in about the tenth century, and antiquities found suggest that they were dwelling in the area most likely from the sixth century. The commune existing then was not cited until 906 when the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book specified Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, over time, embraced a way larger area than just the town itself, and contained the hamlets of Eggington, Heath & Reach, Billington and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the town's name may well have come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" part was not included prior to the twelfth century when the Dean of Lincoln found it a necessity to distinguish it from another "Leighton" that was inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be tenanted to a number of tenants over the ages, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who helped Charles I throughout the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement grew even bigger throughout the following decades and the arrival of a railway and a canal in the 19th Century saw the town develop and grow. Contemporary Leighton Buzzard can be referred to as a prospering market town that's witnessed greater development in the recent past.
