Found in the county of Beds in the East of England, the delightful town of Leighton Buzzard stands close to the boundary between Bedfordshire and Bucks, on the Grand Union Canal, the town has a populace of around 37,000 and a story extending back to the Roman period, when the early Watling St (now the A-5) passed by the town. Leighton Buzzard Through the Ages: It is believed that there had been settlements in or around what is now called Leighton Buzzard going back to unrecorded times, historic relics and coins stumbled on near by give proof of this. The ancient Watling Street (constructed by the Romans), now termed the A5, passed through close by Dunstable and Hockliffe about 2,000 years ago, and the Romans would have at the very least been aware of the village as they passed it.

The Romans were in turn followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was Saxons who used a market sometime in the tenth century, and relics found show that they were residing in the vicinity in all probability from the 6th Century. The village as it was was not listed till 906 when the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 outlined Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, over time, comprised a much greater area than only the town by itself, and covered the settlements of Stanbridge, Billington, Eggington and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the town's name is thought to come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" component wasn't included until the twelfth century after the Dean of Lincoln needed to differentiate it from yet another "Leighton" that he had inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were leased to a great many tenants over the ages, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who supported Charles I in the English Civil War (1642-1645).
