Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Factfile:

Location: Bedfordshire, East of England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Based in the county of Beds in the East of England, the busy town of Leighton Buzzard lays right on the county boundary in between Buckinghamshire and Beds, on the Grand Union Canal, it has a resident population close to 37,000 and a past stretching back to the Roman era, at which time the historical A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed the town. Nowadays Leighton Buzzard is linked to the neighbouring town of Linslade and it's roughly halfway between Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire) and Luton, it is located near to the Chilterns (Chiltern Hills) and boasts a substantial quarrying industry (sand).

Leighton Buzzard History: It is felt that there had been settlements in or around what is now named Leighton Buzzard going back to unrecorded times, early relics and coins uncovered near by show evidence of this fact. The historical Watling Street (engineered by the Romans), now termed the A5, passed through the neighbouring settlements of Hockliffe and Dunstable about 2,000 years ago, and the Romans would have at the very least been aware of the village as they passed it.

The Romans were followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who used the market place sometime in the 10th Century, and antiquities picked up reveal that they were settling the local area more than likely from the sixth century. The commune as it was then was not observed till 906 when the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 outlined Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, in the past, incorporated a lot bigger area than simply the town alone, and consisted of the hamlets of Stanbridge, Billington, Eggington and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the name of the town will probably have come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" piece did not get added until the 12th Century when the Dean of Lincoln found it beneficial to differentiate it from the other "Leighton" which he had inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be leased to a number of tenants through the eras, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who assisted Charles I throughout the English Civil War (1642-1645).
