Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Information:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), East of England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Based in the county of Bedfordshire, the busy town of Leighton Buzzard lies very near to the county boundary between Bedfordshire and Buckinghamshire, on the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a populace of approximately 37,000 and a past extending back to Roman days, when the ancient Watling St (now the A-5) passed by the town. Nowadays Leighton Buzzard is attached to the adjoining town of Linslade and is approximately midway between Luton and Milton Keynes, it can be found near the Chilterns and has an important quarrying industry (sand).

Leighton Buzzard History: It's believed that there were settlements in and near to what's now named Leighton Buzzard stretching back to prehistoric times, age-old artifacts and coinage uncovered in close proximity show evidence of this. The age old Watling Street (constructed by the Romans), now known as the A5, ran through the close by settlements of Dunstable and Hockliffe roughly 2,000 yrs ago, and the Romans will have at least been aware of the village at that time.

The Romans were thereafter followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was they who created the market place in about the 10th Century, and artifacts uncovered suggest that they were settling the vicinity more than likely since the sixth century. The village as it was isn't documented until 906 at which time the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book listed Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, in the past, embraced a far larger area compared to the town alone, and incorporated the hamlets of Billington, Stanbridge, Heath & Reach and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the name of the town appears to come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" piece was not to be included prior to the 12th Century when the Dean of Lincoln found it crucial to distinguish it from yet another "Leighton" that existed within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were tenanted to various tenants over the eras, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who helped Charles I during the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement carried on growing over the ensuing decades and the appearance of a canal and a railway line during the 19th Century saw it develop and evolve. Present day Leighton Buzzard can be termed a prospering market town that's seen increased development in recent years.
