Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Information for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), East of England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Found in the county of Beds, the quiet town of Leighton Buzzard sits right on the county border in between Bucks and Bedfordshire, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, the town has a resident population of about thirty seven thousand and a historical past stretching back to the Roman period, when the Roman built Watling Street (now the A-5) passed the town. These days Leighton Buzzard is more or less connected to the nearby town of Linslade and it is approximately midway between Luton (Bedfordshire) and Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire), it sits close to the Chilterns (Chiltern Hills) and boasts a substantial sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard History: It's considered that there existed settlements in or around what is now called Leighton Buzzard going back to unrecorded times, ancient artefacts and coins discovered nearby give proof of this fact. The age old Watling Street (fashioned by the Romans), now referred to as the A5, went through neighbouring Dunstable and Hockliffe some 2,000 yrs ago, and the Romans should have at least been aware of the village as they passed it.

The Anglo-Saxons came after the Romans, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who were using the market place in about the 10th Century, and artifacts picked up denote that they were settling the region quite likely from the 6th Century. The commune as such wasn't remarked upon until 906 at which time the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book reported Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, typically, embraced a far bigger area than merely the town alone, and incorporated the settlements of Heath & Reach, Billington, Stanbridge and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the name of the town is thought to come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" component wouldn't be applied prior to the 12th Century when the Dean of Lincoln wanted to differentiate it from an extra "Leighton" that was inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be let to a great many tenants over the generations, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who followed Charles I during the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard carried on growing through the following decades and the building of a canal and a railway line in the Nineteenth Century saw it develop and evolve.
