Facts for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire, England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Based in the county of Beds, the small town of Leighton Buzzard lies very close to the county border in between Bedfordshire and Buckinghamshire, on the Grand Union Canal, the town has a population of around thirty seven thousand and a heritage stretching back to Roman days, when the Roman built A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed the town. At present Leighton Buzzard is pretty much connected to the adjoining town of Linslade and is approximately mid-way between Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire) and Luton, it is located near to the Chilterns and boasts a significant sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard History: It is thought that there had been settlements in or around what's now named Leighton Buzzard way back in prehistoric times, ancient relics and coinage uncovered in close proximity show proof of this fact. The old Watling Street (constructed by the Romans), now identified as the A5, went through the close by towns of Hockliffe and Dunstable around 2,000 in years past, and the Romans will have at the very least been aware of the Leighton Buzzard settlement at that time.

The Anglo-Saxons followed the Romans, and it was they who developed a market during the 10th Century, and relics picked up reveal that they were inhabiting the area quite possibly from the 6th Century. The village existing at this time wasn't listed till 906 when the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 identified Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, in times past, embodied a considerably larger area than just the town by itself, and contained the settlements of Eggington, Billington, Stanbridge and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the name of the town may have derived from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" piece did not get added on prior to the twelfth century when the Dean of Lincoln wanted to distinguish it from an extra "Leighton" which he had within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were leased to various tenants through the ages, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who backed Charles I in the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard grew even bigger through the succeeding generations and the coming of a railway service and a canal in the Nineteenth Century saw the town develop and develop.
