Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Factfile for Leighton Buzzard:

Population: 37,000

Based in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the quiet town of Leighton Buzzard lies near to the border betwixt Buckinghamshire and Beds, beside the Grand Union Canal, the town has a population of approximately 37,000 and a history going back to the days of the Romans, when the early A5 (then known as Watling St) passed the town. Presently Leighton Buzzard is coupled with the adjacent town of Linslade and it's roughly mid-way between Luton and Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire), it lays very close to the Chilterns and boasts a vital quarrying industry (sand).

Leighton Buzzard Through the Ages: It's thought that there were settlements in or around what is now known as Leighton Buzzard harping back to unrecorded times, age-old relics and coins picked up in the area offer evidence of this fact. The olden Watling Street (crafted by the Romans), now called the A5, went through the neighbouring settlements of Hockliffe and Dunstable approximately 2,000 yrs ago, and the Romans should have at the very least been aware of the Leighton Buzzard settlement as they passed it.

The Anglo-Saxons came after the Romans, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who were using a market sometime in the 10th Century, and relics stumbled on show that they were inhabiting the region in all probability since the 6th Century. The village as it was was not discussed until 906 when the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) mentioned Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, in the past, incorporated a substantially wider area than only the town itself, and comprised the hamlets of Eggington, Heath & Reach, Billington and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the town's name appears to been taken from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" part was not included till the 12th Century at which time the Dean of Lincoln needed to differentiate it from the other "Leighton" which existed within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were tenanted to a variety of tenants through the years, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who followed Charles I during the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard continued to grow during the succeeding generations and the appearance of a canal and a railway service during the 19th Century saw it develop and develop. Modern Leighton Buzzard can be referred to as a prosperous market town that's seen greater development in recent years.
