Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Factfile:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Located in the county of Beds, the charming town of Leighton Buzzard lays near the county boundary between Bedfordshire and Bucks, on the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a resident population of approximately 37,000 and a history harping back to Roman days, when the ancient A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed the town. Today Leighton Buzzard is connected to the nearby town of Linslade and is approximately halfway between Luton (Beds) and Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire), it can be found next to the Chilterns (Chiltern Hills) and boasts an important sand quarrying industry.

The History of Leighton Buzzard: It is believed that there existed settlements in or around what's now called Leighton Buzzard stretching back to prehistoric times, historic artifacts and coinage discovered in the area show proof of this. The historic Watling Street (put up by the Romans), now referred to as the A5, passed through the close by areas of Hockliffe and Dunstable some 2,000 years ago, and the Romans should have at least been aware of Leighton Buzzard at that time.

The Romans were in turn followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was Saxons who introduced a market sometime in the 10th Century, and artefacts uncovered show that they were dwelling in the local area possibly since the sixth century. The commune existing then was not documented until 906 at which time the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) mentioned Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, over the years, embraced a significantly bigger area than only the town alone, and consisted of the settlements of Heath & Reach, Stanbridge, Billington and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the name of the town seems to been taken from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" element wasn't appended till the twelfth century at which time the Dean of Lincoln needed to distinguish it from another "Leighton" that he had within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were let to a variety of tenants over the centuries, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who assisted Charles I in the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard continued to grow through the coming decades and the development of a canal and a railway line during the Nineteenth Century saw it evolve and develop. Twenty-first century Leighton Buzzard can be described as a flourishing market town that's seen increased development in current times.
