Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Facts:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Situated in the county of Beds, the small town of Leighton Buzzard stands near to the boundary between Bucks and Bedfordshire, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, it has a population of around 37,000 and a historical past harping back to the times of the Romans, when the early Watling Street (now the A-5) passed the town. These days Leighton Buzzard is attached to the adjoining town of Linslade and is about halfway between Milton Keynes (Bucks) and Luton (Bedfordshire), it lies near to the Chilterns and has a vital quarrying industry (sand).

Leighton Buzzard History: It is believed that there were settlements in and near to what's now known as Leighton Buzzard way back in unrecorded times, ancient artifacts and coins found near by show proof of this fact. The longstanding Watling Street (put up by the Romans), now termed the A5, passed through the nearby towns of Dunstable and Hockliffe about 2,000 years back, and the Romans would have at least been aware of the Leighton Buzzard settlement during those times.

The Romans were followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was Saxons who were using a market in around the 10th Century, and artefacts unearthed suggest that they were inhabiting the area more than likely since the sixth century. The commune as it was then was not referred to until 906 after the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book documented Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, in times past, incorporated a far larger area than simply the town alone, and consisted of the hamlets of Stanbridge, Heath & Reach, Eggington and BIllington. The "Leighton" in the name may well have come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" piece was not to be applied prior to the 12th Century at which time the Dean of Lincoln had to distinguish it from the other "Leighton" which existed within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be tenanted to various tenants over the ages, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who followed Charles I throughout the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement continued to grow through the coming decades and the building of a railway line and a canal in the Nineteenth Century saw the town develop and grow. Present day Leighton Buzzard is a booming market town which has seen accelerated development in the last few years.
