The historic Watling Street (constructed by the Romans), now termed the A5, cut through the neighbouring areas of Dunstable and Hockliffe roughly two thousand yrs ago, and the Romans should have at least known of the Leighton Buzzard settlement at this time.

The settlement as it was wasn't cited until 906 at which time the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book recognized Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, traditionally, encompassed a significantly larger area compared to the town by itself, and contained the hamlets of Stanbridge, Eggington, Heath & Reach and Billington. The "Leighton" in the name of the town could have come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" section did not get put on until the twelfth century after the Dean of Lincoln wanted to distinguish it from yet another "Leighton" which was within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be leased to several tenants over the ages, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who followed Charles I through the Civil War (1642-1645).
