Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Factfile:

Location: Bedfordshire, East of England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Based in the county of Beds, the charming town of Leighton Buzzard lies right on the border in between Beds and Bucks, beside the Grand Union Canal, the town has a population of about thirty seven thousand and a history going back to the times of the Romans, at which time the Roman built Watling Street (now the A-5) passed by the town. At present Leighton Buzzard is linked to the nearby town of Linslade and it's about mid-way between Milton Keynes (Bucks) and Luton (Beds), it sits very close to the Chiltern Hills and boasts a significant quarrying industry (sand).

Leighton Buzzard Historic Past: It is believed that there were settlements in or around what is now named Leighton Buzzard harping back to unrecorded times, early artefacts and coinage stumbled on nearby give proof of this fact. The historical Watling Street (put up by the Romans), now named the A5, passed through the close by areas of Dunstable and Hockliffe some two thousand years back, and the Romans will have at the very least known of the Leighton Buzzard settlement during those times.

The Romans were ultimately followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was they who were using a market during the tenth century, and relics discovered suggest that they were settling the neighbourhood perhaps since the 6th Century. The settlement existing at this time was not documented till 906 when the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) mentioned Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, in times past, comprised a far wider area than only the town alone, and contained the settlements of Eggington, Heath & Reach, Billington and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the name of the town seems to originated from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" element was not to be included until the twelfth century when the Dean of Lincoln found it appropriate to distinguish it from a different "Leighton" that existed within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were let to a great many tenants through the centuries, for example the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who endorsed Charles I during the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard grew even bigger through the following decades and the appearance of a canal and a railway service during the Nineteenth Century saw the town grow and develop. Contemporary Leighton Buzzard can be described as a booming market town that has seen accelerated development in the past several years.
